IMPORTANT MESSAGE
I know this Forum is not about posting this But I feel its important and if by me posting this and it saves 1 persons life.
Here is my story Friday night about 6:30 PM My phone rang it was paramedic (that phone call no parent wants to get) informing me that my nephew 18 years old (he lives with me)was being taken to Hospital . He had just been struck by a car on his bicycle he Busted the windshield with his head landed in her back seat.
My nephew is in ICU and is alive but if hadnt been wearing the Correct Bicycle HELMET he would of died at the scene. My nephew is like my son he has lived with me for the past 5 years. I dont even remember the ride to the hospital. I Know I kept trying to get out of car during ride and Run . I have never been so scared in my life. Nothing could of prepared me for seeing them wheel him in. I have never seen so much Blood . He has broken Shoulder broken clavicle broke hand broken foot and severe concussion 347 stiches his neck looked like someone stashed it with knife life threatening wound he has had 4 surgeries this weekend 2 just for the neck wound 2 for brain swelling The helmet Saved his Life he is still hurt badly but he will be okay and I am so very Thankful that I spent the extra money buying him the 200$ helmet as appose to the 50$ one. A helmet isnt where you cut corners I remember the sales lady telling me that and I said okay and he rides everywhere. I made sure to get the right fitting helmet size everything and the Doctor told me if he had not been wearing a helmet or had been wearing a wrong fitting helmet or a cheap one he would of died instantly at the scene. My Point to post this is to reach out and maybe before someone gets on a bike or goes to buy there child a helmet they will remember my story. I have never been so thankful. I feel like this past weekend My heart has been in my throat I cant stop shaking I am so very blessed and just feel like God himself reached down and took care of my boy. My life will never be the same I can tell you I am walking around and realizing how precious life is and what really matters in life.
please please remember my story and make your kids or yourself wear a helmet! Also he was half a mile from our house so it doesnt matter how far or close WEAR A HELMET! my nephew has alot of injuries but he will be okay and I just had to post this I know it might get moved to social forum but maybe one person or many will read this and think about this before getting on a bike w/o a helmet! Thank you everyone for all your prayers God has been listening My nephew had a good day he is starting to feel better and we have so much to be thankful for.

I was one those persons who was wearing my seatbelt before it was the law . I couldn't agree with you more on safety and operating any type of vehicle with or without a motor . I am happy your nephew will be fine . Peace Jimmy
Wow conhall, I'm sorry I missed this yesterday. My prayers are with you and your family, as always. I'm so glad you are clean and sober to deal with this heart wrenching situation. When sending love and good thoughts out to you and your mom, I'll include your nephew in my meditations and prayers. May your hope and strength prevail, Valla con Dios!!!
Thank You everyone for your prayers My Heart has been in my throat since the accident. Its truly a miracle and yes please everyone Put your foot down with your kids Make this a requirement to them No discussion It can save their life I promise you and please get the right kind of helmet make sure its not to small and fits properly.

Great post Conhall!!! I have seen first hand experience of how devastating the injuries can be to kids who DONT wear helmets!! Injuries to their poor brains that should have never happend. It so sad. We need to bring so much more awareness to this because Helmets really do make all the difference in how someones quality of life is going to be, assuming they even survive the injury!
My Nephew whos 13 got so mad at me the other day actually because I made him wear his helmet. His response was "None of the kids my age wear them and They are going to tease me and laugh at me" So my response to him was simple " I would rather they tease you now while you are healthy, alive and vibrant then to tease you because you have a brain injury and lying in bed for the rest of your life unable to do anything for yourself" He didnt give me another second of grief over it and put the helmet on!

Thank you so much for sharing this story. My son always wears a helmet..but after this story I'm definitely reconsidering buying him a nicer one. I am so sorry about your nephew. I hope everything goes well with his surgeries. We will all be praying for him. Keep us posted! And I think I will remember this story every time i take my kid out to ride his bike!

Thank you for sharing this ! I have a son who will be 14 and the fights that go on about the helmet they will end today. I'm sorry you are goin through this right now I'm happy to hear he will be ok. I will be praying for him and Yourself. please keep us up to date on how his recovery from this horriable accident
