I am lost, your question says that "His doctor gives ME more pills."

Who are the pills for, you or your boyfriend?

My doc did the same thing when I went to him about a physical addiction.  He sent me to a PM doc but in the mean time he gave me some more to function.  I have a 6 mos. old and he didn't want me to be sick.  He could want him to taper off just like cattalina said.  Why does he take them? Recreational or bcause he is hurt?  I would recommend seeing a Pain Management doc  they specialize in this sort of thing..good luck

Well, there's two options as to why the doc gave him those.  #1 - He gave the meds so that your bf can wean off the other meds; or #2 - The doc has no idea what's really going on. Alot of general physicians don't really know how to handle addiction because alot of them don't understand it.  If your bf is trying to get clean, he should try looking for an inpatient detox to get off the meds. Or maybe an addiction counselor of some kind to help taper down at home.   And another thing, not to sound too cynical, but just because the guy is a doctor doesn't mean that he knows how to help your bf.  Good luck!
