what do i do ?

i've been on methadone to get off oxy, but i'm having a harder time getting off methadone.. i'm told i need to taper down every 10 days, but i need instant results.. here's the question, do i take the doctors advise and spend 60 days tapering off, or do i admit myself into a detox and hope 5 or 6 days later i'll be fine? btw, i've never been so committed to being clean as i do now, so taking something for 60 more days scares the hell out of me..

Like everyone is saying...Rome wasn't built in a day and you won't be drug free in one either. Good news is that you are serious about quitting....hooray for you!!! Stay strong and the taper will go by quickly!

Unfortunately there no "instant results" quitting an addiction. I will refer you to the following study comparing tramadol as a helper to quit addiction: http://www.informaworld.com/smpp/content?content=10.1080/10550490500528712

Now please understand that there are many people addicted to tramadol even though the manufacturer says that it is not addictive. It does take somewhere between 2-4 months to develop addiction. But if you only take it for two weeks to get you off the methadone then this may be an alternative to waiting 60 days. My concern is you went from one drug to another and I would not want you to substitute yet a third drug in an addictive cycle. I hear it in your voice that you WANT to quit but you will still have to put in a little work, 2 weeks minimum to beat the withdrawals then maybe a lifetime of fighting the psychological aspect of addiction.

Don't get discouraged... you CAN do this, you just need to be a little more realistic about your expectations. Keep pushing forward and in no time at all (compared to a lifetime) you will be clean.

no way i want a 3rd drug to get off the 1st 2... your right about the realistic expectations, i've always made 3 moves ahead, good for chess, not good for addiction.. guess it's taper, thanks again for all your help..

Actually the manufacturer warns of this now. And especially if you have a problem with opiates!

Cute pic, too.
Patience is so hard for us. Just remember that you didn't get to where you are overnight. Don't expect on having this done overnight either.

Then after you are clean, it still takes a long time for the body to regulate itself back to normal. This isn't to say that there isn't a lot of great things that happen right away. There are. See the recent post on benefits of being clean.

thank you all for your help, kind of seems like the taper is the best bet.. i'll keep u all posted on how this is going...

very confusing..!
if someone is considering methadone as a treatment for opiate withdrawal, personal experience is that CT would have been easier (albeit more painfull).

If you do decide on Sub, which it doesn't sound like you want to....you will have to wait at least 5 days off of the Methadone to start the Sub...even then you may go into withdrawal. It is touch and go with that plan.

Going to Methadone to get off oxy is sick!  You should be using Suboxom which is made to alleviate wd from Opiates. I don't know if it will work while using Meth. I used Suboxom for 3 days and stopped everything without any wd. The only problem was difficulty sleeping. I am now clean 21 days. Good Luck. You don't say how heavy oxy user you are.

The 6 day detox will not help much with Methadone. It has a long half-life.

The problem with jumping off at such a high amount is the ability to STAY clean. You will go through hell with the withdrawl. Most people can't handle that and will go right back on, or worse. The taper is your best bet.

Take the time and do it right.

My understanding is that it takes about 2 weeks to get over the w/d. It has a longer 1/2 life than opiates do. I reccomend the taper just from what I've heard.
