Suboxone

I am 6 months pregnant and have taken a quarter of a suboxone in early stages of pregnancy and have again taken a quarter of a suboxone strip. I am not going to do this again for fear for my baby and the fact that I know it was wrong, but what I would like to know is, if I no longer do this, will it be able to be detected in myself or the baby in any way when she is born? My due date is July 22, 2014.   thankyou.

Well, that's great to hear!

I would strongly recommend getting yourself into some type of recovery program, do you go to NA/AA?  It seems as though you may be especially vulnerable right now, the turning to Sub is a red flag for the early stages of relapse for sure, especially taking it being knowingly pregnant.  Those are things typical of the addict mindset (doing something even though one knows there could be negative consequences).  It's also kind of a strange choice to turn to for pain.  Not that it can't be used as an analgesic, but that's definitely not the way it's commonly prescribed.  That personally raises a red flag for me as well.

Does your OB know about your history of addiction?  I would still recommend being honest with your doc about taking the sub the few times you did.  Not because you or the baby are in any danger, but more because it's best to be forthcoming about these things.  Also, if you're having pain severe enough to cause you to turn to a strong opioid medication, you should address that with your OB as well.  Your pain needs to be properly treated.  How often do you have pain, and what kind of pain?

Just be sure to keep your guard up!  Very best of luck, is this your first baby?  Do you know what you're having?  It's a very exciting time!  Try to savor every moment of it.

I took a quarter of a suboxone when I was 2 or so months pregnant for pain which I know I shouldn't have done. I did not do anything else until about 3 or 4 days ago when I took another quarter PIECE of a suboxone! I am not addicted to the suboxone! I just dont want that to affect the baby! I am not addicted to anything as of now, although I took it and it was not MINE... I am not having any withdrawls, and do not have ANY plans of doing this again! EVER! Maybe my posts were misunderstood as in I was abusing suboxone on a regular basis but I have not and am not planning on it! I have a past drug history but have been clean for 3 years until the first time when I took the quarter of the suboxone.

Thanks for clarifying.

Have you seen your OB doc?  I really would recommend telling your OB so you can be safely maintained, or if the doc decides a taper or reduction plan is in order, it can be done safely, under medical supervision, and like I said, the doc would most likely want to switch you to something else besides the suboxone, to be safe.

When was the last time you took it, how often have you taken it, and at what dose?

I guess I did... Im confused. I took it because I was in pain, not to get high! I had a problem before but was clean for three years!

Well, I'm confused then.  You said you took the sub earlier in your pregnancy, and also recently, are they prescribed to you?  For pain?  If so, then you don't have anything to worry about, you just need to talk to both the prescribing doctor and the Sub doctor.

If the subs aren't prescribed to you, then I'm afraid that would be considered abusing an opiate.

If you could clarify what's going on, that would be great!

I am not abusing any drug or opiate! I took the quarter piece of the saboxone for pain, which I greatly regret!!!! Now that I think about it, I would much rather have went through THAT kind of pain instead of THIS! I haven had much sleep last night due to what I did and all of the guilt that I feel. I really don't want anything to happen to my baby, and I especially do NOT want to lose her, so I am dealing with some MAJOR FEAR!

I agree with ABN completely.  It absolutely would able to be detected if the baby's meconium is tested, and some places are testing the placenta in certain circumstances.  If they really wanted to "find it", there are ways.

Also, with all due respect, I don't understand your comment about "no drugs until you're 50"?  You mean 50 years old?  50 weeks?  I just don't understand what you meant...obviously there would NEVER be a good time to take drugs.

"12-16 months of pregnancy."

"with that being said-It will be long gone by then!"

Thats not true.

The doc will test the babies Meconium after he/she is born which holds all toxins from 12-16 months of pregnancy.

Meconium

"Meconium is the fecal material passed by the newborn within the first three days of birth. The color is generally dark-green due to the presence of bile pigmentation. It begins to form between 12 and 16 weeks (second and third trimester) of gestation until birth and therefore it can provide a history of in utero drug exposure."

Well....NG covered it all very thoroughly for you. Really nothing more to ad to that. Its my understanding that they can detect anything from 12-16 weeks of pregnancy. But like NG said...they have to specifically test for Subs so your best bet is to be honest with your OB. You will be fine if you are.

Good luck

Hello and welcome, and congrats on your pregnancy!

Were you taking the sub to get off another opiate?  If so what, and when did you switch?

Suboxone isn't typically prescribed to pregnant women, and while some have taken it with no issues, there are other, "safer" options, which would be Subutex or Methadone (that's the preferred method for addicted mothers-to-be).

What you need to do is be 100% honest with your OB.  I'm sure you're scared, but it's the only "right" thing to do.  Trying to detox yourself could end in disaster.  W/Ds can cause all kinds of complications in pregnancy, including loss of the pregnancy.  Usually, it's considered safer to keep the patient on a low maintenance dose until after delivery.  Yes, there is the risk of the baby having w/ds, but the medical team would be prepared to deal with it.

It's just so important to not try to do this yourself.  Most likely, you'll be pleasantly surprised at the level of support you will get from your doc.  Remember that they have seen and heard it all.

As for detection of the sub if you decide NOT to tell the doctor?  It's impossible to predict and NOT something you want to gamble with.  While suboxone doesn't show in a routine tox screen, more and more providers are testing for it, because the level of abuse of subs has increased.  As far along as you are, IF they wanted to test for it, they would likely find it, even if you quit today.  If that happened, then you've added a lot of problems for yourself, including CYS getting involved.  If you're honest up front, that won't be a must, and even IF they would be informed, you wouldn't automatically lose your baby.  If you were dishonest and it was discovered that you took the sub during your pregnancy without informing your doc, they would be FAR less willing to work with you.

I wish you the best and hope you find the courage to talk to your doctor, and soon.  You'll feel so much better once you know you've done the right thing, and that the health and safety of your baby is better protected.  There are SO many women who find themselves in your position.  It's scary, but it doesn't have to end badly.  It just takes the courage to face your fears and do the right thing.
