Trying to quit smoking

Hi,I am a 34 year old female,I have been smoking for seven years.I have just now decided to quit.I have taken up walking,i walk two miles a day,but my lungs feel like they can explode when I am done walking.Right now I am chewing a piece of gum, sour apple bubble gum,to be exact.Do any of the over the counter medicines help you fight the cravings,or help ease the nicotine fits, and all so the moodiness.I know this is going to be hard, but if I want to lose weight and feel better about my self,I need to quit smoking. What have some of you done,to quit smoking and what helped you.How long will it take for the nicotine to get out of my system?I have a husband and 3 children,I don't want to turn into a B-I-T-C-H,but I know I will, and I hate puttiong my children and husband through that.Any info would be greatfull and very much appreciated.                                                                                                                                                                        Blackrose

My husband and I decided to quit smoking together.  Today is the day.  We decided about a week ago and since I don't like withdrawals, I went to the dr. to get Wellbutrin to help.  I took it for one day and threw it away.  I then tried the lozenge and it made my throat numb and tasted awful. I then remembered a friend of mine went to an acupuncturist quite a few years ago so I scheduled my husband and I on Wednesday.  He smoked way more than I (about 1 1/2 - 2 packs per day)  He went down to 6 cigs yesterday and haven't talked to him today yet.

I would light up take a couple of puffs and put it out yesterday.  It is now 8:18, I have been up since 7:00 a.m. and haven't had one or the desire to have one. We are both going back to the acupuncturist today for the final session.

This seems to work for us.

I have smoked for 10 or more years and have tried quiting a few times and what helps the most for me was patches. I started up again only because of my friends and a lack of willpower. Now I am trying to quit pot and cigarettes all at once. I smoke one cigarette a day just because everything at one time is too much. I am a full believer that cutting yourself back is much better than cold turkey. But who knows what is right for someone else or if I am going about it all the wrong way.

I began smoking again after 20 years!!!  When I went through the break up of my marriage.  Nicotine is certainly addicting.  I hope you can find a way to wean yourself off of them.  That worked best for me, as when I didn't have ANY I would just panic.  Better for me to know...well I have three more to smoke today, two more, etc.  I had a difficult time and I still smoke when stressed out.  When you are fighting more than one addiction smoking seems to increase (in my case) and then becomes "the least of my worries".  However, it does suck the life out of me too.  I would like to prevent all the bad things that happen because of my use of drugs and tobacco.  And doesn't the world just make you feel like a HUGE STUPID IDIOT when you smoke??  I know this is GOOD!  It shames us into behaving better.  Peace and  good luck
