My health after smokeing

I quit smokeing 4 mo. ago...after only a month I started to catch a cold it lasted 3 weeks. I have had 3 more colds since the first in as many months...I rarely get sick....my last cold was 6 years ago. Dose this have something to do with the fact that I have quit smokeing?

Your question asked about colds i.e. more of them since you quit about 5 months ago. I cannot really answer intelligently as I just quit 56 days 4 hours and 23 minutes ago. Not really any colds for me but I sneeze more than before and appear to have more sinus drainage --- assume something in my chest is probably trying to clear up?  I started smoking in college as I thought it was the cool thing to do. I smoked for 34 years then quit one time last year for 18 days --- gained 13 pounds.  This time I have gained 20 - and since I was already 30 lbs overweight I am more than miserable at 270.  I used patches for the first month -since then only food as my crutch.  I don't think there is anyone who likes cigarettes as much as I do. I think and dream about them constantly.  My chest hurts and I have a shortness of breath - these are both post quitting -- I guess it will get better in time.

I am sorry to hear that you went back to smoking after quitting but it sounds like you can quit at will as you had actually put them down for 3 years some time ago.  I know if I light one up I will start again but I will never stop so I am fighting this very hard.

I am 44, And quit smokeing 6 monthes ago, with a friend.  It went a bit better than I had hoped.  I had quit before for 3 yrs.  I Picked up the habit again about 2 weeks ago,,,, and hate myself daily!!!!  Whoever posted the message... DO NOT PICK UP THAT ONE!!!! WAS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!  I am still determined to kick this aweful habit.  And pray I don't put on an additional 15 pounds with the 15 I have put on in these past 6 monthes.  I shall try,, soon, but fear failure.  Am seeking some help!  Thanks

I used Primatine Mister when I quit smoking 4-1-89.
I had quit a hundred times before and started back.
Thinking, "That was nothing. I think I'll have just ("ONE")
to reward myself...."

One rule fits all on this one... DO NOT PUT THAT FIRST ONE IN YOUR MOUTH.

I READ ABOUT A STUDY LONG THAT HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH SMOKERS QUITTING AND GETTING SICK WITH DIFFERENT VIRUSES. THEY TRIED TO LINK IT WITH THE SMOKERS HAVING THE CIGARETTE IN THEIR MOUTH AND WHEN THEY STOP SMOKING THEY WIND UP NAIL BITING OR JUST KEEPING THEIR FINGERS AROUND THEIR MOUTH AND NOSE THUS,  MAKING THEM OPEN TO EASY VIRUS TRANSMISSION.  IT WAS VERY LIMITED IN SCOPE BUT I THINK ONCE THE SMOKER ADJUSTED TO BEING SMOKE FREE THEY TENDED TO KEEP THE HANDS AWAY FROM THE FACE AND THE COLDS SUBSIDED AFTER AWHILE.  THIS MAY BE PLAUSIBLE BUT IT WAS MANY MOONS AGO WHEN I READ ABOUT IT AND MY MIND IS NOT RAZOR SHARP ANYMORE...ANYWAY, CONGRATS!!!! I WAS ABLE TO STOP SMOKING 6 YEARS AGO AFTER 15 YEARS OF SMOKING THE CIGS...THE ONLY THING I REALLY QUIT FOR GOOD.

I quit smoking 15 years ago.  My experience was just the opposite. When I smoked I always had colds and bronchitis.  Since I've quit, I rarely get colds (knock on wood).  I think I read the average American gets 3 colds a year.  I get one about every three years. Never get the flu and never get a shot. It may be your lungs are still damaged from the smoking and you're still suseptible and are somehow coming in contact with the virus, maybe in a way you didn't before.  I think you'll find as time goes on you'll become healthier and congratulations on quitting.  I know how hard it is.

welcome to the forum and let me say congratulations on quitting
nicotine. i have been addicted to many different drugs in my 35-
40 year involvement with them. nicotine was the most difficult drug
i have ever given up. i quit march 13 of 2001. i didn't quit be-
cause i wanted to. i quit 'cause my nerosurgeon told me he would
not do any more spinal surgery on me until i had been nicotine free
for 60 days. since quitting, i've noticed that i seem to be a lot
more susceptable to every little sniffle, cold, and flu that comes
along. my doc tells me that this should clear up in 2-3 years.

ya' know, everbody seems to be a lot more happy about me quitting
than i am. i just wish i could get half as happy! even though i
really miss nicotine, i am determined to not pick up and start a-
gain. i don't even know you, but i can honestly say i am proud of
you for quitting. my doctor claims the only substane more addictive
than nicotine is methadone.

keep an angel on your shoulder
