has anyone else noticed this before?

After having used my pains meds for nearly 5 years, the effects are very predictable and short.  However, the other day I developed a cold and took some over the counter decongestants with my pain meds, after a while I noticed that my meds felt "magnified" like I had taken way too many, even my pain didn't return after the usual 6-7 hrs when the meds wear off.  I was actualy able to skip a dose, I just didn't need it.  I couldn't figure out what happened until I took more decongestants, then it happened again.  Anyone else ever notice decongestants magnifying the effect of the pain meds?  I couldn't tell if it was some additive effect or they where inhibiting the breakdown of the meds in the liver and extending their effects.

Jess,

You are so right, a few of the older folks who had been running that particular A.A. site for many years and developed a cliche were the ones I was referring to. The newbies were often chased away because of the criticism for slipping and accused of not really taking their sobriety seriously. It really was quite depressing and negative. I tried to help the new comers with the sorts of positive things you just quoted but then I found this site and never went back to the other one. That was about four year ago.

I am an A.A.ER too so I wasn't talking about all, only those few. I can't even remember their handles now since it has been so long. We have one ole fuddy duddy like that in my A.A. group I attend.

I was off of this site for about a year or so because I had no access to a computer until I finally got one for my home. When I got terminated from my last job, I lost the access to the forum. I missed it alot since I really needed the support to help keep me sober. Anyhow thanks for the clarification, I think that is an inportant point.

God bless you and everyone else here,

Hey?!

I hope all that talkin' bout me was good.... I'm not really THAT crazy. The "Falling Down" movie comments are just a Silly Fantasy for me... I wouldn't really uhhmmm, kill people for NO GOOD REASON. (yes... I can indeed write in a "Psycopath writing style"... But it's all in just good fun!)

BTW.. Where you @ Suzie?... I got paged into work almost as soon as I got back from Minnesota tonight~!

So I'm here and I put the Yahoo IM onto the Work PC, BUT I'm getting nothing... WHat's your Yahoo Handle again? You can send it to me at my E-mail so's you don't get deluged from whoever is looking at the forum......

groovy,

You are absolutely correct. I remember yeas ago the same poster not on this forum but on the (A.A. COFFEE TALK) had several nicknames. He actually started a flamewar by writing to himself negative comments everyday, includiong others at times to fire them up as well. Finally everyone noticed the same style of writing between the three and realized it was the same person. They finally kicked him off, but he came back months later only to try it again with the newbies. He belongs in the in-patient unit or on the psych chat forum. I stopped reading the A.A. forum then and found this forum instead which was much more informative and supportive.

Those A.A.ers were holy rollers. If the newbies relapsed, they scolded them rather then supporting them to keep on trying. That turned me off. I prefer solving problems, not creating them. The ole saying, being part of the solution, not part of the problem.

well, not exactly.  i am currently taking buprenex - hooked on it actually.  i used to take vicodin, percs, oxy...whatever i could get my hands on.  then i detoxed...about 25 times without much luck.  then, i flew to a clinic in fl that prescribed buprenex...since then i have been taking it - since last april.  i cannot seem to stop it completely without going into withdrawals...it makes me feel really good...even in very small amounts.  it seems to cure my depression as well as my need for narcotics.  i do have legit pain - migraines, which is what started me down this road to begin with.  i'm very afraid of what i would combat the headaches once quitting bup.

there are too many people on the internet these days for me to get too personal with anybody. you just never know what the other person is about - and you never know if they are telling the truth about anything.  there have been too many cases where a girl runs off to meet someone they met on the net never to be heard from again...just be careful with anyone you meet here or anywhere online ok?

Yep..you are exactly correct..About the chemistry..pheremones.. We wont know that til we meet.  But until then its exciting and intriguing.  Believe me i have met a lot of people on line.  Im not new at this.  And I know that we got huge possibilities...But thats all it can be at this point.  Hopes and dreams.  Take care! Good Sat night to ya..So are u drug free?

i was mostly just teasing him about falling for a person over the internet.  you can't really know a person until you meet in person - there's that old chemistry thing that can only be felt up close and personal, right?  i hope it works out the way you both want it to...

WHo's a "Holy Roller"?

Just cause some of those AA'ers are almost CULTLIKE doesn't mean we're ALL bad... Just that some of those smaller groups get taken over by charismatic "Leaders" that push their OWN dogma onto the group....

This AA guy says, "Slip as much as you want to... Just keep coming back! The following quote is RIGHT from the AA and NA text: The ONLY requirement for membership in AA/NA is the DESIRE to stop."

Anyone who's so intolerant as to preach about others' slips is just a "Dry-drunk or Dry-addict." They STILL have the disease. Just because you stopped using, doesn't make you a success.

Hope everyone understands!

YES, the delayed reaction is depression.

Lexapro was just recently approved.  Celexa is also good, especially if you have anxiety.  It made me sleepy.  Effexor is a jazzier one which also helps with axiety, oddly enough.  It was my best but gave me high blood pressure.

The strange thing about Benadryl, is that it's unpredictable.

Well this is new to me...I thought Benadryl was the "safe" sleeping aid.  I have been on benzos now for about 8 years and the outcome seems bleak.  I went to a 30 day detox for alcohol and namely ativan and I was still going through horrible WD despite their coctail of drugs (as I recall, Pheno Barbs, Vestiral, Depacote, etc.).  I am back on 2mg of Ativan a day and doing okay except those times when I run out.  I have heard of taking Tegratol for withrdrawls...has anyone else??

Brad,

Yes. I have a seizure disorder mainly starting after detoxing from alcohol. After relapsing after nearly two years, my Doc suggested Tegretol for detox although she admitted it wasn't that good for me since I get the DT's etc.

I tried the damn Tegretol and it crashed my liver. I heaved my gutts out for nearly three days. I had the same effect with Depakote.

Klonopin is the only drug I can tolerate with no side effects at all. I have taken as much as 8 mg at a time when really stressed years ago and did not even get tired. I don't do that anymore, I follow the correct dosage, 2 mg four time a day. It works great for me.

Oh by the way, (wiskey)  drinking will make you sick if you take alot with a benzo. Also I never tried Benadryl but Bonine an over the counter anti-nausea, anti-vertigo medication and it promotes sleep well for me even with the Klonopin. I take it when I go through one of my stress phases. I don't take the 300 mg's of straight Codiene anymore I went off of it with some withdrawal last February.

Now I use Ultram, a much better pain killer for me. I also have sciatica but it is caused by Fibro flaring my muscles and connective tissues which then press on my sciatic nerve. I am now cutting grass again though, in sptie of being in severe pain all over when I finish a big job and can barely walk. I want to get on the road to a new life though, not just sitting around whining about my pain. I am doing something about it. I may also have Lupus but I cannot take steroids like prednisone, it makes my mind really push the amperage. I just have to accept that I need the pain killers and if anyone wants to think of me as an addict, than so-be-it. Good luck to the rest trying to hold onto your detoxing. I hope it works and you start to feel better soon.

I feel 1000 times better after going off the booze.

Good morning folks.  Just a quock stop to say hi on what's starting out as a good day 6 at 100% free.  I feel like I had been looking at the world through several panes of thick, dirty glass.  Now they've been not just cleaned, but removed and I'm a part of the world again.  The difference is truly remarkable.

hey guys:
alchemist:
i thought eveyone knew this old junky trick (especially pain docs
recomend) alchemest, you should know that if you put the levo
(left) rotation on dextomethorophan you get levo-phanol or levro-
dromorian. also anti-histamines can magnify the effects of dope as most have unpleasent sedative qualitys. the real supprise is that ephedrine and pseudoephedrine can also intensify narcotics. the addition of amphetamines such as dexidrine and desyoxin can really potentate narcotics (dangeriously) and should probably be avoided.i do believe dextro-methorphan is an old favorite trick of pain docs.

groovy;
now i've told you about seconal suppository (yout altheep before
you can get your finger out of yer ath.

it would seem our drugy friends of the north could add a lot to
this discussion, as they seem to have a preoccupation with sticking things up there. the most popular form of oxy is in suppository form.

now back in '78 i was in the hospital with a badly broken leg. 1
night i really set up to hollering for more morphine ( i really
did need it). this crusty old nurse (tough girl of the ward) came
in and looked at me and said "hmm i know what you need honey>" and before i even knew what was happening she had a cold steel
bed pan under me and a dulcolax suppository in place. i showed
her...nothing happened...which got me another and another. man i
hope that old bag has to wear  a bedpan for a hat, during her
stay in hell!

Thanks for writing....

As for an antidepressant; my Dr. suggested I might restart prozac ... I stopped while detoxing because I didn't want any chance of being any more agitated than I was.  I've never heard of the A/D that you're on...

As for the benadryl, like I said, after detoxing from vicodin years ago; my sleeping cocktail was taking 2 benadryl and the usual klonopin.  I would get drowsy and sleep well .. for the whole time I stopped opiates I did this...

So, naturally, since I was having trouble sleeping lately after coming off the darvocets, I took 2 benadryl, a klonopin; I felt the affect of the benadryl, but the anxiety that came screaming through (even with the klonopin) was like a nightmare....

I dont think I'll be trying benadryl for awhile....

I was wanting to learn if anyone had a delayed reaction of responses to withdrawal....

Hi--I was a vicodin user (well, okay, abuser...) and I remember reading that antihistimines (benadryl) can interact with narcotic pain relievers and benzodiazepines such as Klonopin.   The benadryl might intensify its effects. I would ask your pharmacist.  Why it never bothered you before, I can't say.  Just trying to help.  Peaz

Hey, I am so late, but I'm wondering if you're noticing these people having problems with the same stuff that's in your theraflu.  I know you gave it up, but just notice it for future reference.

Later,
The Beautiful Cin  (I really don't look so much like a junkie anymore.  Try it!!)
