That's a pretty potent drug to be taking all at once!   Do you know how much per day he is taking of it.  I ask because withdraws from it are going to be rough.   You can confront. Him, but unless he wants help, he wont accept it.  Addicts have to want to be done.   Everbody has their own rock bottom and until your friend reaches his own, he will continue on this path which will lead to more drugs or harder street drugs as you probably already know.   There are suboxone and methadone clinics you could refer him to.   You are a good friend to stand by him and be so concerned.

That's why he's injecting it more than likely.......because it's extended release and he wants to feel it all at once.  It's hard to get high on an extended release if you do it the right way!  The other thing he could be doing is just emptying them and putting the powder in his mouth to release it all at once or snorting it.  See, the capsule is what probably keeps it releasing slowly, so if he empties it, voila.....he gets it all at one time.  That's pretty dangerous given what he's been through!  He could absolutely die and needs an intervention quickly!

My friend has had his battles with all drugs. I've watched him thru it all, but most important I never left or gave up on him. He recently had heart valve replacement. He is only 28.I myself am 38. He got staff and it attached to the weak valve. So after the surgery he had to administer his own antibiotics thru a pic line. He thought that was the coolest. After all his Dr. App. Were done he started experimenting with pills. Injecting them that is. Most of the time I can't understand him when he's doing them that way. And when hr doesn't have any he is Angry, moody and down right violent. So got put on this avinza stuff and it's 120 mg.  I soon started noticing empty capsules. Also a lot of powder on counters. So is he able to break this drug down to inject. If so is he in danger beings how it s extended release. Will he get to much at once. I've been there thru all the jail, all the up's and downs, I don't like this but he needs my help. Every one else has abondoned him. NOT THIS GUY. But need answers FAST!!!

I had never heard of this drug before, so I looked it up.   Avinza is indicated for the management of moderate to severe pain when a continuous, around-the-clock opioid analgesic is needed for an extended period of time.

Limitations of Use  Avinza is not for use:
As an as-needed (prn) analgesic
For pain that is mild or not expected to persist for an extended period of time
For acute pain
For postoperative pain unless the patient is already receiving chronic opioid therapy prior to surgery or if the postoperative pain is expected to be moderate to severe and persist for an extended period of time.

Avinza 90 mg and 120 mg capsules are only for patients in whom tolerance to an opioid of comparable potency is established. Patients considered opioid-tolerant are those taking at least 60 mg of morphine daily, at least 30 mg of oral oxycodone daily, at least 8 mg of oral hydromorphone daily, or an equianalgesic dose of another opioid for a week or longer.

Has your friend been on some kind of opiate therapy or is this something new prescribed?
