I was talking about liquid methadone. I live in UK and not sure about rest of UK but where i live most people on methadone for Heroin addiction get liquid methadone. I have had 5mg tablets as my dr said they were only strength available even though i've heard of higher strength tablets?.I was on 140mls at time so had to take 28 tablets a day! I only got the tablets as went on Hols and was told had to take tablets.

I've been on methadone for 5 years and in the last 6 months my hands and feet joints have been swelling up and hurting sooo bad that I cant stand it any longer. My question is this... Has anyone heard of methadone causing this problem? I would like to know if anyone knows of any sites that have research on side effects from long term methadone use?  I am going to a Dr in two weeks about this problem, not my methadone Dr., Any info on sites would be great.

i have been told that methadone rots your teeth because of the mouth dryness it causes and also makes what saliva you do have on the acid side...i take extremely good care of my teeth...always have, had braces for 4 years, learned good dental habits young, i do it all, rinses, flossing, brushing...doesnt matter...my teeth are now starting to take a beating, and i have been OFF methadone for 5 months now...its not just due to bad dental care..i went to school with a john kelly...LOL!

ask another doctor, get a second opinion?  maybe its a vitamin or mineral  deficiancy?  try eating jello...its supposed to be good for nails...also do a google search on methadone and fingernails?

SUGAR FREE METHADONE??? really?  i never knew methadone tablets even had sugar in them and i would have never even question that...WOW!!!  or are you talking about the liquid???   i learn something new everyday on this forum...sugar in medications is something that would have never crossed my mind...but i guess if you are diabetic you must have to watch for sugar in ANYTHING that you would have to consume...

Not sure about the nails i'm on methadone and haven't had it. I don't understand why they don't give everyone the sugar free methadone. I am diabetic and get sugar free and i've also had the blue methadone that is stronger than green 10mls =1ml(don't know if same in US but is green in UK) and that is also sugar free but is absolutely disgusting i used to go to chemist every day and buy a packet of sugar free sweets so i could eat one straight after to stop me being sick. I just don't know why when their is an alternative sugar free version they give out the meth with all that sugar in to rot peoples teeth. Although i'd much rather have to clean my teeth than have be back on Heroin.

Yeah, I guess so... I have never even seen the inside of a police car, let alone "jailito." My addiction was the "quite" upper-class workaholic couple kind.  However, we are all equally the same dirty "addicts" ya know.

Oh..never had nail fungus.  This may have to do with something else.  Best  of luck to all my buds!

Methadona not de best drug for whole lifetime. It's thought of as harm reductuion so if it keeps you out of "jailito" and make your life better than it may be worth it. There are many side effects of long term methadone (especially on high doses) but I never heard of nail fungus? all the best

I have been on methadone for 10 months/100mgs. I have not had any "weird" side effects from it at all.  I do know that because I am on it, I take care of myself and my body better than I ever have before in my life! I'm working out 4-6x week, taking vits and supplements, investing in skin care products, and eating a very healthy diet so i don't gain "m-done weight". My husband also benefits from my "new" way of thinking about health and what we put into to our bodies. I believe if you are going to take m-done, you must step-up the care of your "whole" person.  Hope everyone will consider this , if they are on methadone for an undetermined amout of time.  Live well,  Victoria

I was on methadone for 5yrs using a dose of 20-40 mils. I agree the meth did prevent me from using other drugs especilly substances that are lethal.I cannot attribute any conditions to the methadone,I have heard people say it gets in your bones, also it rotts your teeth, however if the people brushed their teeth and didnt eat sugar products in access, maybe the teeth woulnd be disgusting. I believe we have to weight the pros and cons and se if the minor side effect on the nail preblem is worth  the life treatening treat of active addiction. john
