get rid of hives

My daughter of age 5, yrs got hives(Acute urticaria) on 7thSep,2010 suddenly .Before this she had suffered with stomach pain and diarrhea and got cured.When she is using Zyrtec,get relief.when she is not taking Zyrtec,hives are coming Again.When I go to dermatologist he had given steroids.  when she use steroids, hives are increasing than normal stage.Another Dermatologist had given zentel, Ivermectol for only one dose. and xyzal daily.Now She is not getting hives than previous days. will she get rid of hives completely?

Hi, welcome to the forum, from his history it suggests that he may be allergic to water or its contents. Very less has been known about water allergy and it is termed as Aquagenic urticaria. It can be due to exposure to allergens present in water in your area or due to ions in non-distilled water. Cholinergic urticaria is seen in response to temperature changes.

Following measures will help him-

- Stay away from water as long as possible.
- Avoid going in rain outside.
- Keep him cool during summer as even sweating will cause reaction.
- Try clean water for bathing. Avoid showers.
- Dry him immediately as soon you finish your bath.  
- Avoiding exertion.

My 12 year old son started itching without a rash uncontrollably shortly after getting out of the shower.  I started about 3-4 weeks ago and is very painful for him and painful for me to watch him with these episodes. About 2 or 3 years ago at the same time of year (end of August beginning of September) he had this happen and it lasted about 4 to 6 weeks.  The dermatologist as well as his allegist both say it's classic Cholergic Urticaria.  He is on Zytec in the am and Periactin at night.  The allegist now wants him to drop zyrtec and switch to allegra.  My son has allergys and just recently was diagonosed with asthma brought on especially from exertion.  He plays soccer and doesnt have the painful itching then, but after a shower??  I'm no so sure it's UC then.  Anyone else have this?  What helps he is really in pain.

Hi, if she is not getting hives, then you need not take her for test. If recurs then get the tests done. Itching will come down soon, as she is on medication. Take care and regards.

I'm happy to convey that she is not getting hives but itching is there still.Doctor suggested me to use the same XYZal syrup for 15 more days twice a day.Do we need to take her for allergy test still?

Hi, welcome to the forum, urticaria can be acute or chronic, it is seen secondary to exposure to allergen and mediated by IgE antibodies. Her body is hypersensitive to certain things. Stinging insects, aeroallergens (uncommon), Foods and additives like Milk, egg, peanuts, nuts, soy, and wheat are the most common agents to cause generalized urticaria.

This triggering factor should be identified and should be avoided. A skin allergy test can be useful.  It’s good that she is responding well to antihistamines. Other drugs like Ketotifen and Leukotriene inhibitors are also effective adjuvant.

The occurrence of urticaria and future recurrences cannot be predicted. There is uncertainty in the disappearance of the urticaria. Some studies stated that if urticaria stays for more than 6 months there are 40% chances that it may persist for period of 10 years. In some cases it can disappear in a short period. I suggest you to consult a allergy specialist. Take care and regards.
