Hello,
Low hemoglobin can be caused by drugs such as anti-retroviral drugs for HIV infection and chemotherapy drugs for cancer and other conditions but steroid treatment is not known to cause low hemoglobin count. For the low hemoglobin count, you should take a diet rich in iron and take iron supplements which are taken orally. If the lab values for hemoglobin remain the same then you can get injectible iron supplements.

Thank You so much for your info. As for the immunodefiency disease, one doctor has said I should take the shots "HIZENTRA", and another says that I can try to build my hemoglobins by eating a lot of  foods with iron, B12, and folic acid. Do you have an opinion as to whether this might work???  My IGA,s, and others, are only 520, and he says that is why I have chronic bronchitis. She says the hemoglobins are low due to steroids. Is this also true??? I'm too confused to know what to do as these shots are to be taken for many weeks and are VERY expensive. HELP!     Sincerely, Cindy

Hello,
For respiratory infections Bactrim is better than Biaxin as Bactrim is a wide spectrum antibiotic. you should continue with Bactrima and get a CT chest and a bronchoscopy done after consulting a respiratory physician.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. Treatment can be started only when the diagnosis is confirmed. I sincerely hope that helps. Once again, Thank You for your help. I made a mistake, and told my MD that I would like to try BACTRIM, instead of BIAXIN, for my ongoing respiratory infection,so that is what she prescribed. I,ve been on it 5 days with no improvement. Should I call her and tell her of the mistake? 20 days of LEVEQUIN, preceeded by 20 days of AMOXICILLIN,did not overcome infection.I'm assuming BACTRIM will be to mild? Any thoughts? I,m feeling worse daiy and can't get into JOHNS HOPKINS yet. Thanking You in advance.

Hello,
The procedure to look into the lungs is called bronchoscopy. In this an instrument called bronchoscope which may be rigid or flexible is inserted into the airways, usually through the nose or mouth which allows the practitioner to examine the patient's airways.

For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
