Hello infomother22,

I would have your mother go back to her doctor. You say the cough medicines give relief for a few days only. There's a reason your mom is
coughing. She needs to go back to her doctor. Also make sure that her
bedroom is dust free. Some people are very allergic to dust and dust
makes them cost. Also, your doctor could test your mom to see if
she has the beginning of asthma.  I wish you mom good luck in finding
out why she is constantly coughing.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello and hope you are doing well.

Has asthma been ruled out? This can cause chronic cough. The other causes for long term cough besides asthma are GERD and post nasal drip from allergies. GERD is gastro esophageal reflux disease where the stomach acids come back into the esophagus and spill into the windpipe causing cough. Treatment with antacids will help neutralize the acids. Post nasal drips can occur with sinusitis and throat infections. Giving up cigarettes will abolish smoker's cough in 90% of people. Talk to your GP about the other causes for cough in the meantime she could try warm salt water gargles and breathing exercises.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
