Cats eye

I want to start this off saying I have a vet appt tomorrow as I know how hard it is to diagnose over the internet not able to examine her.

My cat, Princess has an eye problem where her eye is crusted shut that I put a warm washcloth over to get rid of the crust so she can open it.  It wasnt too bad yesterday when I first noticed it, so I opened her eye to see if there was anything in it, and I noticed around the color part of her eye where its outlined in black there was a thickened black line and was very dark red.  Her eye was just tearing then.

Today her eye is crusty, cleaar discharge, and is red.  I also cannot open her eye all the way like I could yesterday.

I thought about putting neosporin in her eye but I'm not too sure this is a good idea, but a nurse friend suggested that to me.

I'm not sure what happened, as shes one of 5 indoor only cats all vaccinated.  She might have scratched herself accidentally or got into a scuffle with one of my other cats.

Thank you, and I will reply once we take her to the vet tomorrow morning.

First,  never put anything in the eye unless it is specifically meant for the eye.  You cannot put regular neosporin in the eye only opthalmic neosporin.  However, by the time you read this you will probably have been to the vet already.

Your veterinarian will do a complete exam on you cat.  He or she will then most likely do several eye tests to check for dry eye and for corneal ulcerations.  Then he or she will give you the appropriate eye medication.  Eye infections can be bacterial, viral, traumatic or secondary to systemic problems.   Only your veterinarian will be able to differentiate.  Some times the infection can be a combination.  In this case more than one course of treatment may be necessary.  If I can help you furthur please let me know.  Thanks,  Dr. Cheng

Just got back from the vet..  She has a bad eye infection, which the vet didnt know if it was viral or bacterial.  She said if its viral all my cats can get it but didnt elaborate on it.

She gave Princess gentamycin and amoxicillin drops to clear it up.  She did an eye exam and it didnt show any scratches or tears in her eye.   I hope this works and my other cats dont get i.t
