Hair loss, red bumps, lethargy.. whats going on???

I have a dog, Cappy, who is a 1 year old beagle that we got from a shelter back in February of this year. He was a puppy mill dog before he went to the shelter, and is missing a paw on his front right leg. He was otherwise deemed healthy and has had two checkups since we got him.

Lately, we have noticed some changes in him. About a week ago, we noticed that the fur on his chest was thinning, and about 5 days ago, we noticed a bald spot the size of a Dollar Coin and inside that bald spot, was a red splotch. It wasnt raised, and he wasnt trying to itch it.

I took him to the vet and they said it was likely some kind of rug burn or some friction thing. They tested his thyroid and for demodectic mange. The thyroid was normal and there was no signs of mange. The next day, 8 pimple like bumps appeared on his inner thighs and seemed very itchy. We went back to the vet who gave us some antibiotics and oral steriods to give him. Those bumps have since gone down a LOT (he has been on meds for 3 days now). they are not bumps anymore, and just some slightly red spots.

He is still shedding endlessly, which is very strange as it is only getting colder and colder here in Connecticut. His bald spot on his chest is still there with the red splotch.

The thing that has me concerned is that he is just not himself. He is usually rather energetic and eager to please. Outside tonight, he seemed out of it.. He seemed like he was being stubborn, which is not typical. he did not have the eagerness to follow us and be with us that he normally had.

He also has just over all seemed lethargic and not as energetic.

I am wondering what possibly could be causing this? The combination of hairloss and lethargy is what has me most worried. I KNOW that it is not normal for a dog to loose that much hair. On his chest and neck, he is white, and it is basically pink right now because the hair is so thin there.

I have a friend in S. Calif. who got a beagle as a companion. He's had multiple issues with allergies. It took her a long time to find the right diet for him, medications to help through certain seasons and although he's doing better, he still has itchy times. It's going to be a lifelong struggle.

Has your vet suggested any allergy meds for your beagle? I imagine there are some safe for dogs but don't try to dose him yourself with over the counter stuff.

The thinning fur and lethargy does sound like a thyroid issue (hypothyroid)...but I guess your vet already tested for that. I'm sorry your little pup is still not feeling well. I hope he gets better soon!

We completely cut out TUNA and nothing changed, we have him on a grain free diet.. my vet is stumped.

Reminds me of pityriasis rosea, something one of my kids had when they were young. There was a large "mother patch" that looked so much like ringworm. A few days later he developed smaller red spots on other parts of his body. I was afraid all those spots were going to grow into big patches like the first one but that's not the way it works. It can last for quite awhile but is generally harmless.

Of course, I have no idea whether dogs get this problem or not. I'm sure the vet will pop in with the correct answer. :-)
