My dog took metronidazole & is suffering nero problems

Hi,
My 17 lb terrier was given metronidazole after tooth surgery & a week & 1/2 later...is suffering from neurological effects as a result, ie: disoriented, staring out into space, won't respond to stimulation, won't eat, is staggering a bit & has lost 5 lbs.  Our vet here in mexico doesn't seem to believe it's from the meds because he hasn't been on it long term but i strongly disagree. Skyler is 14 & aside from cataracts & a heart murmer is in good health. Please...I need some information as to  whether we could expect him to get better or not. Is there anything we can do for him?

Thanks so much in advance!

It is a well know fact in veterinary pharmacology that high doses of metronidazole can cause neurological symptoms.  The neurological symptoms are usually dose specific and once the medication is discontinued your dog should return to normal unless there is concurrent neurolgical disease.
