Thank you very much! We took our dog to a larger hospital (our vet is very small town) and they x-rayed her foot. It shows bone fragments around the joint so there is no solid determination yet about it being injury or an arthritic problem. But no break or fracture.
They taped her toes and gave us non-steroidal anti inflammatories and an anti biotic. We check back on the 14th.
And boy are you right about the bandage :) I'd say by this saturday we'll be going back for a retape.
Thanks again!
It is good medicine to try the anti-inflammatories for one week. If it is a sprain or strain that may be all that your pet needs.
If there is no improvement than further diagnostics and or treatment is warranted as follows:
Have the toe X-Rayed if it has not been done already. Some toe fractures, sprains, or strains can benefit from stabilization, such as splinting or taping to other toes, to aid their healing. The problem is that most dogs will not leave the bandage on. Hyperextension injuries, or dislocations are not fractures but may sometimes have to be manipulated back into place, which is very painful and must be done under general anesthesia. Your veterinarian will have to make that determination.
Hope that helps!
Sorry, I forgot to mention she is 11 months old. Nothing slows her down, not even the foot :)
