black belly skin

Hello,

I recently moved into a house and my dog loves to lay out in the backyard in the sun.  I noticed her belly skin (the only skin I can see) is nearly black.  It had black coloration before due to nursing several litters (before I got her and fixed her) but now it is very very black.  Is that due to sitting out in the sun?  By the way, I live in San Diego if you are wondering where on earth it is sunny and warm this time of year.  She seems fine otherwise.  Not oily or itchy.  Just really black.

There could be pigments in the soil which dye her skin.  Malassezia, a skin yeast can also turn the skin black but this hyperpigmentation is usually secondary to skin allergies and inflammation.   You may have to have this biopsied or have a skin scraping performed at your vet's for a definitive diagnosis.
