claw growing into toe

I have a thirteen year old cat with a claw that is very thick and grows in a circular fashion into the pad of his toe.  About three years ago I took him to the vet for a trim and after that I was able to trim this nail with no problem. Until about a month ago. Now the claw is very thick and going into the toe again. Is there a safe way for me to trim this claw without taking him back to the vet? [ He is an indoor cat and extremely neurotic. Terrified of everything in fact. I hate the idea of taking him outside again as he will actually panic and hyperventilate.] Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I forgot to mention that there are many groomers that come to the house which will eliminate the stress for your cat.

You should be able to cut a thick claw with a dog nail clipper, but if the claw has already grown into the pad your cat will most likely require antibiotics, so a visit to the vet is necessary.

Vets don't charge that much for nail clips, and you can get your cat's anti-biotics there.

Many groomers will clip nails for a nominal fee.  Please take your cat for a nail clip well before it gets to this point.  Nail clipping once per month should take care of the problem.
