pregnancy

so my dog, Kahlua,  gave birth last night, to one pup, I did not even know she was pregnant. Is it normal to have one pup, or do you think maybe she had more and something happened to them?

It is unusual for the larger breeds to only have one but not impossible.  Your question didn't say where she was at inside, outside etc.  Did she have it in a box, on a blanket etc. The reason I'm curious about the location is that some dogs will move their pups if the don't feel safe/secure for some reason.  I'm trying to ensure she didn't have some outside then come in for the night and then have one after she came in.  If you didn't know she was pregnant her belly must have not been very big, so I'm hoping one is all there was.  Good luck with the new momma and baby.

she was inside, and on a blanket. She is an inside dog, so the only time she goes out is when she is using the bathroom, or when we go 4 a walk, so I'm glad I can say 100% that she did not have any outside....thanks 4 the reply

Single pup syndrome does occur especially with young females
and their first breeding. Another concern is that she still has more pups inside
her, therefore an xray of her belly is indicated to rule this out.
Your vet will also examine her and can feel the pups and help her deliver them if present.
This world is filled with unwanted dogs and cats so having her spayed is a great idea.
