elevated sed rate and crp?

hello,
My 3 1/2 year old son had an elevated fever of 104-105 for 10 days. For 5 of these days he was in the hopsital where they did a number of tests. Everything came back negative except his sed rate was 55 and his crp was 22. 3 days after the fever went away he was re-tested and again the sed rate was 35 and the crp was still 22. The drs are cluless. They believe it may be JRA but he has no rash with the fever and complains of no joint pain. any suggestions?

hi my daughter 3 years nowhas been poorly for over a year. She had high temps up 41oc was hospitalised twice first time with crp of 66 and second time with crp 171. She was given antibiotics on an intravenous drip for over a week every 6 hours. She had an MRI on her spine and a lumbar puncture. Those came back fine, she also had an x Ray on her chest they were fine too. They said she had streptococcal bacterial infection with was effecting her joints. She did not have a sore throat or enlarged tonsils? She did had some joint pain though. They sent her home with a crp of 78 which is still high, antibiotics for a further 2 months. They monitored her on outpatient appointments but did not test her bloods again. I noticed she wasn't we'll still, wouldn't run around and lay about quite a lot. She would still get raised temps too. I forced them to do another blood test just before Christmas. This came back with a crp of 110! She's now on steroids, penecillin and iron liquid. The consultant said he doesn't know why her crp is so high and has arranged a meeting next Monday with a specialist. They've also booked her in for a heart scan? Any ideas? Or has anyone had a similar experience with a diagnosis? Help!

My 2 yr old grandson is going through the same thing....  Did you ever get a diagnosis.  He has been hospitalized several times over the past year.  Thought it was CMV now saying he was incorrectly diagnosed.  Pain in body sometimes cannot walk or turn over.  Constant rashes and fever.  Sed Rate and CRP continues to be elevated.  Infectious Disease doctor thought it may be Rheumatoid but last week that doctor said no because his joints werent swollen that day.??  Now he is being referred to a Neurologist.  We just want answers and the correct treatment.  We are giving him Motrin and Tylenol daily and for the severe pain he was prescribed Liquid Lortab which we try not to give him.  It is really heartbreaking!

My 10 yr old daughter has been running high fevers for 11 days now, we have been to the ER 4 times. The last time we went was Monday, 8-1-11, they did more blood work and found that her CRP is 12.7 and SED RATE is 77. She has lost 7 lbs and is having joint pain in her knees and ankles. 4 days prior to the onset of the fever she complained of pain in her spine. They admitted her to the hospital 8-1-11 and released her today, they ran many test, some we don't have the results yet. The infectious disease control dr feels it is viral and that it will go away in a week or so. Her fevers range from 101.0 to 105.0, She also has night sweats, when the fever is down she feels mostly fine and will play around the house for a little while but tires easily and does not have much of an appetite. Some days are better than others where the fever doesnt last as long and she eats a little better. The ER said to follow up with her pediatrician and if it doesnt resolve in 14 days to return to the ER. My concern is that something more is wrong and they are unable to see it. CBC was normal. Anyone?? Today is day 11, at the moment her temp is 103.3/ 8-3-11

Hi,
I am sorry you are having problems with your little one. I have a very similar thing going on with my 2 year old son. Have you had her tested for auto immune diseases? They will first do an ANA test and see if it is positive. It could be that she has Lupus or JRA. We are having tests done on my son and last year he was hospitalized with the same thing kawasakis which did not turn out to be the case. It wa sbecause his sed rate was 88 and CRP was in the 20s. However, they just said it was a virus. Then he has had multiples strep cases and it seems like his fever has gotten better because he does not get it as often as he used to. He used to would run 104- 105 even with motrin and tylenol for a week straight. We had his tonsils removed and it did not help. His sed rate has been tested multiple times over the year and is always high. However, his blood counts go back to normal after infection. Have you had your daughters blood tested again while she was not sick to see if that was the cause of the sed rate? I would deffinitly have her ANA tested. Good Luck to you. I know its hard because most of the time the doctors look at you like your crazy. Lupus runs un my family and they have never considered it but he has many symptoms and now with his ANA Im leaning on that. I just want to figure it out so we can start treatment before it starts really hurting him.

I've been sick for a couple months now. I've been in and out of the hospitals and ER and the doctors could not diagnose what I had. For anyone who wants guaranteed help there is a clinic just across the border of El Paso. It's in Juarez, Mexico and is completely safe to go. The doctor and staff are so kind and they will diagnose what you have. They usually have a lot of the test results the next day. They treat a lot of cancer patients with great success. That's where I ended up going and I was finally diagnosed with what I have.

My soon to be 4 year old daughter has had daily fevers for 4 and a half weeks now.  Temps vary from 99 to 103.5. On the onset of the disease she had rashes (I would call them red not salmon), right now they are almost gone.  She complaints about leg and feet pain which seemed to have gotten progressively worse - she has not walked properly for the past two weeks. SED rate and CRP are both very high. She is very anemic with iron levels dropping over the period. She was hospitalized for almost 3 weeks where she got treatment for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Kawasaki which were both ruled out after treatment. Diskitis is out as well thru an MRI, bone marrow was normal.
Her pediatrician thinks she has some kind of Juvenile Arthritis but two Rheumatologists (one from Wake Forest the other from Duke) do not think that's what she has. In the meantime the fever keeps going and unless she takes ibuprofen she will just lay in bed moaning and complaining.  Even with the medicine she still does not walk. We are ready for the disease to either go away to never come back (best case) or for a doctor to give us a diagnosis and a treatment that makes our little star better.  I know this is all very generic but is there anyone in this community with clues to our puzzle?
We appreciate any suggestions at this point.

Hi, I'm sorry your son is going through this right now.  JRA and its symptoms are different with every patient.  JRA is divided into several categories:

Systemic JRA occurs in about 10% of cases. It involves joint pain, swelling, fevers, and rash. It is similar to adult Still's disease. The cause of this form of JRA is unknown.

Polyarticular JRA occurs in about 40% of cases and involves multiple painful, swollen joints. The cause of this form of JRA is also unknown. Some children may have a positive rheumatoid factor and the condition may turn into rheumatoid arthritis.

Pauciarticular JRA occurs in about 50% of cases and involves only a few joints. Some of these children, in particular boys, will be HLA-B27 positive. HLA-B27 is a substance called a gene marker that is associated with several autoimmune disorders.

I hope that these Dr's can get the answers to you for your son.  Please keep us posted.

Your Friend,

Spastic

Infection and inflammation can cause the elevetated sed rate and crp.  I would hope that it was all related to the bad viral infection and still let the doctor follow up with tests for JRA.  If it is JRA, it is best to catch it and treat it early.  Please keep us posted on how he is doing and what the doctor finds.

he just had a high fever of 1o4-105 for 10 days. It went down with motrin, an then he was fine. then 6 hours later the fever would spike again. I took him to the hospital on teh 6th day of this fever. While there thry oticed he had puss covering hid left tonsil. the next day he has a bit of an enlarged spleen. that only lasted for a day. The tonsil puss started to move to the other tonsil but then was clearing up buy the 3rd day. He still has a bit on his tonsil, a real little bit. No on e knows what happened.
My Dr. thinks its JRA because the hios SED and CRP are still elevated. I am hopingit was just a bad viral infection, that is taking its time running its coarse.
what do you think?

Sorry to read your little guy is having a rough time of it.  You mention that he does not have a rash or joint pain.  Besides his fever and lab results, what symptoms does he have?  What are the specialties of the doctors treating your son?
