Hello Naya,

I'm not sure what you were taking interferon for - auto-immune arthritis or some other disease? At any rate, at the end of treatment, my guess is your immune system rebounded from the suppressing action of the medication.

Rheumatoid arthritis (the auto-immune kind) can cause symptoms like you are having - stiffness in the morning and after sitting for a while, pain upon movement or while sitting still. Redness and swelling in the sore joint are also common, but joints do not have to appear to be swollen for inflammation and damage to be going on. Some of my joints that have never visibly swelled look the worst on xrays.

Please get a referral to a rheumatologist who will run blood tests, take xrays, and lay hands and eyes on your sore joints. Don't wait. If RA is what is going on, the soon you are treated the better.

Your symptoms sure sound like rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disorder that causes arthritis among other health problems. Interferon (a chemotherapy drug prescribed with ribavirin and/or other drugs) is used to treat chronic hepatitis C infection. Interferon STIMULATES the immune system and it's not uncommon that patients with auto-immune disorders will experience a worsening of their autoimmune disease symptoms while on interferon therapy. Some patients will develop an autoimmune disorder while on treatment that they didn't have prior to treatment (for example, psoriatic arthritis).
Carolanivey gave you good advice when she suggested you see a rheumatologist as soon as possible. Seriously, don't wait. The sooner you get your symptoms evaluated and treated, the better. Waiting could result in permanent joint damage.
Best of luck to you.
