Kidney pain

Last nov. I had a partial nephrectomy on my right kidney for a malignant tumor. Today I had follow up testing done with contrast die and iodine or whatever they put in the four big glasses that I had to drink every 15 min. Well, now it's 11 hours later and my kidney is really hurting very painful 7 on the pain scale. I took an oral toridol and it is t helping at all. Will this pass? Is it normal?
Any help please. Becca

The IV contrast is excreted via the kidneys so that may be the cause of your kidney pain.  If it continues to improve, I would not worry about it.  If the pain worsens, let your doctor know.  Typically, you want to avoid IV contrast if you can (although if your kidney functions are OK then it should be OK).  We always remind our patients with a history of kidney problems to remind the ordering doctors of their history so that they can avoid IV contrast if possible.  Good luck.

Hi and thanks for using the forum.

If you only had the oral contrast (not dye that was injected through an IV) then it should not cause kidney pain.  Oral contrast is excreted via the intestine (with a bowel movement) and would not affect kidney functions.  Oral contrast can however cause abdominal cramping and pain.  Is it possible that the pain you feel is not necessarily your kidney but your abdomen?  I would give it a day or so and if the pain persists then I would let your doctor know.  I would expect the pain to pass, so if it doesn't subside soon, then I would have it checked out.  Good luck.
