Sore throat for weeks

So im getting  worried as im on week three of a sore throat that started with a neck rash that might have just been poison oak and not related but also had a coated white tongue , i went to the doc and he said it looked a little sore and saw one of my tonsils was swollen, he gave me penicillin in which im on day 7 with no real change... Im tired irritable and headache dont know if thats from meds or just anxiety....doc said this could be mono or streop but ive had no fever and im a 35 year old male, please dont tell me to go to the doctor and an honest opinion would help thanks

I know you don't want to be told to go to the doctor, but if you have had a sore throat for 7 days and no relief you should be seen. The penicillin obviously did not work for what is causing your sore throat. You may need a change of antibiotic. Did the doctor do a throat culture for strep? A quick swab to the back of the throat  for a rapid strep test could give you the answer to your discomfort. Whatever is causing your discomfort, it does not sound like it is going to go away on its own. You are going to need the treatment of a doctor.
