Is it safe to take melatonin while pregnant?

My OBGYN told me that the reason she will not recommend melatonin during pregnancy is because the supplement has not been tested or approved by the FDA.  I'm having horrible insomnia and my doctor recommended benedryl.  I asked her about Zzz-Quil, which is an OTC sleep aid with the same active ingredient as benedryl and she said that was fine.  Overall its helped me sleep a lot better.

Thanks for using the forum.

You should speak with your doctor before starting or stopping any medications including herbal supplements. There is conflicting advise about melatonin and pregnancy online. Some sites state that is should not be taken during pregnancy, or while breast feeding. Other sites state that there is a "safe dose". Your doctor is aware of your medical health and history and will be best able to help you decide what is best and safest for you and your baby.

Congratulations on your pregnancy.
