Any Asthma Surgery?

Hello Doctor,

I myself Sumeet Chakraborty a resident of India would like to know more about the asthma control mechanisms and if there is any kind of surgery available for the same. My Mom who is now 52 years old is suffering from Asthma from the past 28 years and has been on regular medication to prevent any asthma attacks. She takes around 4-5 shots of the drug from the nebuliser and has been regularly checking for any kind of alternative drug. I am just curious to know if there is any kind of surgery available that cures asthma or if there are any good drugs/medications available newly. I would really appreciate your thoughts on the same.

Thanks,
Sumeet C

For asthma do this pranayam everyday, and you will start to see benefits within 6 weeks.Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume later.
Anulom Vilom –
Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril
then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril
then -keeping the left nostril closed  deep breath-in through right nostril
then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril.
This is one cycle of anulom vilom.
Repeat this cycle for 15 to 30  minutes twice a day.
You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed.
Also ask your friends about Patanjali Yog and you will learn a lot more.

One of the newer medications I like is Foradil, in an aerosolizer (formoterol fumerate inhalation powder). The down side is, it is pretty expensive. It comes in little 12 mcg packets in the U.S., and is very long lasting.  It has a number of downsides, and I suggest you read the PDR carefully to review those side effects, including elevation of blood pressure.

The other issue is that asthma is often connected with long-standing encapsulated bacterial infections. There is a great deal of controversey regarding anti-biotic therapy for asthma, and I am not taking a position, however these infections can remain sub-clinical and will not show on an x-ray nor will there be elevated levels of substances in the blood to suggest infectious process. On the other hand, after a regimin of an anti-biotic, some asthmatic patients improve dramatically.

The is no surgical treatment for asthma. Accupuncture is helpful in some cases.
