Ibuprofin ?

has anyone ever noticed that ibuprofin helps their asthma?

I told my daughters dr that it seemed to help, and he just looked at me like I was crazy.
I swear it helps. I'm not nuts, and I ?

In general Ibuprufin should not be used for fever. Never ever for a child's fever unless instructed by a physician.  Fever is part of the immune system. Bacteria can only replicate with a narrow range of temperatures. The elevated blood temperature prevents a blood infection and ominously, a heart-valve infection requiring a pig-valve replacement.

Ibuprufin, as mentioned is an anti-inflammatory, and may relieve asthma symptoms, but it is not a good medication to use on a daily basis because it is hard on the liver.

Hi,

anti-inflammatories are often suggested to be take for costochondritis that sometimes follows an asthma flare.  I have found that since taking it for a chronic ankle problem, I haven't been plagued with sinusitis like i used to be .. it must keep the swelling down for mucous membranes -- lungs included

Do ask your Dr .. great post!

thanks everyone for your comments !

I gave her the ibuprofin for a fever, that just happened to help her coughing/breathing, that's how I stumbled upon this reaction to ibuprofin.

wow...I never knew this. I have had asthma since a child (now 21) and mines seems worse at time than it ever did when I was a child.
I have never taken asprin before...just because I was told i shouldn't because of the asthma. I did used to take ibuprofen years ago and it didn't affect me at all. But one time I was prescribed it by the doctor (can't remember what for now) and about 30-45 mins after I took it I felt my chest tightening up and my breathing was becoming weezy...kinda like it would if i've been running or something and so I haven't taken it since. Definitely worth looking into!

I have been doing A LOT of research on NSAIDs and asthma recently.  I have been diagnosed with Aspirin Exacerbated Respiratory Disease (AERD) and will be going through aspirin desensitization soon.  AERD affects aproximately 20% of all asthma patients, mostly those with adult onset asthma.  The actual numbers are unknown as the attacks may start as much as three hours after taking an NSAID and therefore not be atributed to the medication.  The chemical process behind the reaction is complex and involves the production of way to many leukotriines which cause more inflamation

Theoretically, ibuprophen should help asthma (if you don't have AERD) because it is an anti-inflamatory.

I wouldn't use it as a daily therapy, but I certainly don't think you are crazy.  Use it carefully. Remmber that this could change at any time as well.  So always be mindfull that she could start reacting to it.

I hope that helps you some.

Take care and have a blessed day.

I have asthma and like the doctors say...it makes it worse. For me anyway. They tried me on it and I could feel my chest getting tighter and I was starting to get weezy. It didn't get any worse than that but I didn't want to take the risk so I stopped taking it. Ibuprofen can be bad for your stomach lining and cause stomach ulcers so I'm not that bothered about not taking it anyway.
