constant clearing my throat

ruf
i am constantly having to clear my throat, and not just a mild clearing of the throat like most people it's a violent clearing like something is stuck in my throat. i have that feeling constantly. also as of late i'm feeling short of breath and a slight tightening of the chest. i'm having to take deep breaths every so often to feel like i'm getting enough oxygen. my doctor has given me mucinex thinking it was excess mucus but it didn't help. any ideas would be great.

You should have your throat examined by an ENT specialist who can look all the way down in your throat.  People do get things stuck in their throats, such as fish and chicken bones.  The shortness of breath could be from throat swelling; another reason to have a thorough exam.

I have to clear my throat a lot too and mine is from asthma meds that dry me out and from a post nasal drip that causes an inflammation of my vocal cords (called vocal cord dysfunction, it has a more medical term but I can't ever remember what it is).  I was told that when I feel the need to clear my throat to swallow and drink plenty of water.  I was also told to go to the National Jewish Medical website for breathing exercises.  I haven't had much success with the breathing exercises but I'm also not sure if I'm doing them right.
