Quirky 3 year old

Hi
Our 3 year old has some quirky ways, she has low set ears, a larger than average head, very clever but has no common sense at all.

Hm.  sometimes common refers to how often something happens in a particular age group.  And there are MANY things to look into when trying to understand the quirks of a 3 year old and 'nothing to worry about' is a stretch.  She is talking about thinking skills when she refers to common sense . . .

I still suggest you visit a developmental pediatrician.  I would rule out Turner's syndrome.  And some of the other things you speak of, please let me know what you think of my above post.  good luck and hope you come back.  By the way, a child with autism can improve greatly with intervention therapies!!  good luck to you

Alright first of all she's three. Second of all if her speech development and bodily functions are functioning properly you have nothing to worry about. Third common sense is something taught, as the term Common refers to something we can all relate to.

Hi.  I like your usage of the word quirky as that sounds like what she is.  I understand what you are saying.  Something feels a little different to you about your child and you are worried about her.  That is being a good parent in my opinion.  I had a quirky kid also who turned out to have sensory integration disorder.  Now it is hard when they are three because there is such a broad range of 'normal'.  I would make the suggestion to enroll her in a preschool program now----  two half days a week would be excellent at her age.  This will give you an opportunity to get feedback regarding her from someone that is unbiased and familiar with all different types of kids.  It will also give her a chance to begin to be in situations that will require more flexibility on her part and to acclimate to a classroom setting.  We did a private preschool for our son and it was really helpful.  He did have difficulty there but the problems he had in preschool helped us begin the process of understanding what was going on with him and to seek intereveniton.

With the facial abnormalities you mention, low set ears in particular---  that is a characteristic seen in Turner's Disease.  Has your daughter been screened for this?  I'd think they'd pick up on it by now but just thought I'd ask.

Keep in touch and let me know what you think about the preschool idea.

Also, for a child that has trouble listening, following directions, etc.----  choices can be very helpful.  They are more apt to comply if given lots of choices.  good luck

Yes we do feel she may be on the autisic spectrum on the low end. She has severe temper outburts, and will bite her hand with frustration at times. If she asks a certain person to do something for her it has to literally be that person none else will do. She repeats herself over and over again if if she has been answered. Our only concern is that when she attends main stream school she is going to be classed as a naughty child when in fact she is not. She just has to be managed in different way to most 3 year olds.

Is she showing any other signs. As u r in the autism forum I'm assuming you think she may b autistic. Do she bang her hed ? Sit in corners and rock back and forth ? Have outburts of temper tantrums. Stimulate her hands ect these are signs of autism

She is 3 years old - perhaps lack of sense runs in the family.
