Hyperlexic is when a child can decode words at a level higher than their grade level. Hyperlexic children generally do not comprehend the meaning of the words they are reading. Reading is comprised of many things including decoding (understanding the sounds that letters are associated with), comprehension, vocabulary, etc. Hyperlexia can be decieving in that it seems that the child can read however they do not demonstrate understanding of what they have read. For example, the child reads "The cat jumped." You ask, "What did the cat do?" and they don't know the answer. It is important to supplement the child's reading instruction with reading curriculum that promotes comprehension.
Hyplexia is a condition where a child seems to know and understand the meaning of letters/words/sentences almost on their own. They can usually read at 3-6 grade levels above from their chonologic age.
Many hyperlexic children also have problems in social settings. They have such ease at reading books, but have trouble reading someone's face for expression or body language. They are awkward in groups of children and/or adults.
