MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi!
Speech delay can just be because the toddler is a late talker or it can be a more serious condition. Usually a three year old child can speak short phrases and sentences and communicate clearly. I personally feel it is too early to worry. Your child is just 2 and half years old. Encourage him to speak, applaud his words, praise him, pretend you do not understand sign language, show flash cards and encourage him to verbally identify, play nursery rhymes and sing them with him, and may be let him be around his age children for a few hours everyday (say in a pre-nursery). If the child does not start speaking by the time he is around 3 years plus, consult his pediatrician regarding this. Take care!

The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you. The advice may not be completely correct for you as the doctor cannot examine you and does not know your complete medical history. Hence this reply to your post should only be considered as a guiding line and you must consult your doctor at the earliest for your medical problem.

thanks a lot for the comments i feel relieved.the boy has a twin brother who is able to talk and we are able to understand him.the boys were born pre terms with weights 1kg.The one who is not taliking is very active , has eye contact , plays with others well, does not spin wheeels, generally he is just normal as to growth and other developments. the only concern was or is talking. he is able to call our names and when he needs something he will direct you to what he wants and he gets frustrated easily if you dont understand.

Two and a half is NOT too early to be concerned about autism. Most symptoms develop between 15-18 months. Has your child spoken before but not now? Does he or she show any other traits of the autism spectrum? If not, it could be a speech delay, or a speech disorder, like childhood apraxia of speech. This can look like autism, although it is different. My son has both.
