Hashimotos and/or Graves??

Hi,

I was diagnosed with Graves disease 16 years ago and it quickly went into remission.  About 2 years ago, I was told I was hypothyroid and was put on synthroid.  About a year ago, I had a sudden onset of weird symptoms such as beesting feeling/tingling in feet and hands which also moved to face, yeast infections, cognitive issues, vertigo, sweatty palms, migraine, menstrual changes, lichen planus, bone spurs, multiple crowns in that same time period, plus many more.  I was sent to a neurologist after I blacked out in the shower and went to the ER.  All tests came back negative for MS, etc.  He found that I had multinodular goiter and sent me to see an Endoncrinologist.  He said it was the graves and adjusted my synthroid.  I had my follow-up appt. and these were the results:

Ultrasound showed one nodule changed from hpercholic to hypoechoic, but no substantial growth.
Anti thyroglobulin AB H  372.0 (ref. range <10)
Anti thyroid microsomal AB H 1790.7 (ref. range <5.0)...result was rechecked
FT4  1.3
T.S.H.  0.87
Free T3  2.7 (ref range 1.98 to 4.6)
Thyroglobulin L 0.2 (ref range 0.8 to 49)
Vitamin D 25 Hydroxy L 14.7 (ref. range 31-80)

I am told this means I have active antibodies for both Graves and Hashimotos....is this possible to have both?  I have been having adrenaline rushes with tingling, and heart palpitations, emotional swings, etc.  I cannot seem to lose weight and I eat right and exercise daily.  I do cardio 5x a week and lift 3x a week.  I have horrible mood swings and get angry so quickly.
If I opted to get the thyroid removed, is it true that the immune system can then attack another organ, or would I be better off removing it?  My Endocrinologist swears these symptoms are not because of the thyroid because the levels are controlled by the synthroid....which he also stated about the weird nuerological symptoms that flooded in last year as well......??? I really don't know what to do here, but DO NOT feel like this disease is under control just because the synthroid has made my levels "normal."

Thanks in advance for your time!

Thanks!  I did go to that expert forum (thyroid), but it seems that I never get there early enough and it's reached it's daily limits.  I thought I was posting this one to the expert forum.  I was so excited to see it went through, only to see I posted it to this forum ....not once but twice.  Oops!  Thanks for the info!!

MedHelp has a new Autoimmune Disorders forum and the physician answers questions every other month. He just recently had a Q & A session, so he probably return again in July for another one.

I highly recommend posting your question in the thyroid disorders forum. There are many people there who are in your shoes from what I could tell... here's the link:
