Broken Back

My back was broken L4 & L5 were fused together with a metal plate in 2008 I was told not to bend, lift or twist but I have gained about 50 lbs. What kind of workout can I do that will be safe and help me lose weight. I have no other health problems and my age is 52 yrs.

I think the best exercise for you is walking.  You can start off slow and then gradually powerwalk.  If you have a treadmill, you can simulate a small hill so that you can burn calories faster.  Diet is also a big factor at, I'm going to say it, our age (I'm 47) because we just don't have the same metabolism we had when we were younger.  So I think some good long walks daily with an eye to what types of foods you are eating will go a long way for you.  Just remember, it took you a while to put it on so it is going to take a while to get it off.
