Can lying down too much cause back pain?

I was in a car accident four months ago. I still have pain when I stand up after lying down and also after several hours in my chair at work.

I also hurt my tailbone Dec. 31st. It still hurts when I stand up. Because of that, I try to lie down as much as I can. I'm wondering... can lying down so much be causing my back pain to stay around?

(I also fractured several ribs. I'm not sure if this could contribute to the back pain. It's just that it's been four months and I'm starting to get worried this pain is here to stay.)

Yes, lying around too much can cause back pain.

When the core muscles get weak, especially those in the anterior (front) lower abdomen, the back muscles work harder to compensate. This sets up a chain of events that causes back pain.

There are other issues that can exacerbate back pain -- laying on your back without supporting your knees, lying on your side without keeping the spine straight and supporting the neck.

A skilled chiropractor or physiatrist / physical therapist can give you advice and exercises appropriate to your current condition.

I have that problem to, and what I've noticed for myself, is that while in motion I notice pain less...and so when at rest it feels good until it's time to move again...
