Scoliosis

I have had scoliosis as far back as I remember because I was always teased about the way my skirt sat on my hips.  It was never recognized by my family and so I grew up never thinking anything was wrong with me and have not had much in the way of pain etc. until recently.  I am now 47 years old and my right leg, my right hip and the joints there hurt terribly.  Also, my neck is always so tight and painful.  I seem to have 2 curves, one in my lumbosacral region and one in my neck.  Wondering what my options are and if surgery so late in my life would be helpful?  I got an MRI done today to see if any nerves were being pinched and will have the results tomorrow.

Would be very grateful for all your help.

Thank you for that note.  I have good news.  My MRI shows that although I do have the 2 curves in my cervical spine and my lumbar spine as I had known earlier, I do not have any nerve compression or disk protrusion.  The pain of course comes from the curvature in itself, the doc said.  I am relieved and will get on with the pain, I guess, with the pain medications.

I hope that you will also have some relief of your pain as well.  Perhaps we can share some more.  I hope you will keep in touch.

I too have scoliosis, lumbar area.  I am 48 yrs old and have had mild low back discomfort all my adult life also.  Fortunately, now they screen aggressively and most young girls can be fitted into a special brace to correct the curve or surgery can be done.   I am pretty sure that surgery, quite horrendous, is reserved for the young, whose skeleton has not reached maturity or for those individuals with life threatening curves that encroach on the lungs, heart etc.  There are many reasons for pain in the spine and the MRI is the gold standard to detect herniated discs, deterioration of the spine etc.  I hope you get a good report and if something shows up, I hope you get an easy fix.  Good luck in your diagnosis/treatment etc.  :)  Kim (grannykim)
