Rib pain

I have been recently diagnosed with a moderate disc herniation at L5-S1 with effacement of the ventral sac along with a nice-sized bulge at L4-5.  The only real symptoms I get from this is left thigh numbness and something else, but I am uncertain if this relates to the herniation or bulge.  Lately, I have been waking up with severe upper rib pain...I mean bad.  I woke up this morning and went to get up and the pain nearly brought me to my knees.  Takes a few minutes and passes but whoa!  Just this past Friday (today is Tuesday), I had an epidural steroid injection into my lumbar spine; this was supposed to help with symptomatology, but quite frankly, I am noticing no difference whatsoever.  My question is, what is that rib pain coming from?

I had one ESI (epidural steroid injection) last Friday.  The only thing that did was raise my blood sugar to a point that I slept almost the whole weekend.  All my symptoms are still there and it seems my foot hurts even more.  The only thing that seems to help somewhat are trigger point massages.

I have the same type pain occasionally and have been told it was muscle spasms. These spasms start in the back and seem to work their way around to the front. How many epi's have you had?
