herniated disk

A family member was recently told the results of an MRI she had.
The MRI revealed she has a herniated disk. I would like to know
if you can tell me what a herniated disk is. Are their treatments
for a herniated disk ?  Thanks in advance. Eve

Hi!
A herniated disc (or slipped disc as this is commonly called) is basically a portion of the disc (usually the soft insides) which bulges out of their position between two vertebrae through a weakness in the ligaments. So, this is in a way something like a hernia. This can cause pressure on the spinal cord or on the spinal nerves, depending on the direction in which this hernia occurs.
The treatment is usually conservative. After an initial period of 3-4 days of rest and painkillers, physiotherapy is started. Spinal manipulation, traction, back exercises, massage, etc are done. The patient may have to use specially designed corsets and braces for some time. These help the hernia to fall back into place. The symptoms subside and the person is fit to resume normal life. He/she may have to  avoid high impact and force sports for life, but other than this can lead a normal life/dance (for fun), play sports casually, run, jog, cycle, swim etc.
Sometimes, despite all treatments the disc does not fall back in place. A surgery may then be required. Take care!

The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you. The advice may not be completely correct for you as the doctor cannot examine you and does not know your complete medical history. Hence this reply to your post should only be considered as a guiding line and you must consult your doctor at the earliest for your medical problem.
