lot of pain

hi, i started having a back pain a year ago, but it wasn't that bad cause i was taking care of myself not lifting to much.
2 weeks ago, i start having lot of pain , not in my back but in my left hip down my left leg ending behind my knee, now i feel the pain lil bit on my left ancle. i did MRI last week and my doctor told me that i have herniated disk, and he's doing treatment for me it's been 10 days but i'm not feeling any better, and i feel lot of pain specialy when sitting and when standing up, and the major pain is in my left hip.
i'm resting a lot and always putting the ice pad on my lower back, and my doctor told me that i should do the cortisone injection .
my questions are, do i need a surjery if i'm not feeling any better or it will take some time till i feel good again?
for how long usualy cortisone shot will last?
and does the machines that i'm having the treatment on help my case?
pls i need some answers i'm verry worried specialy that what i do as job is the reason why i had all this problem.
thank you.

i am so depressed and verry worried, i went today to my doctor after giving up from taking oxycodone for my severe hip and all left leg pain, my cairoprator told me it's from the herniated disk that i have in my lower back, i've been on oxycodone for 3 days now, and today i went to my health doctor and he gave me a cortisone shot in my hip, and 6 pills of celebrex and told me to take them with the oxicodone at night for 6 nights.
my question is , how long does it take for the injection to do the job needed, 1 day 2 days???????
pls i need a answer i am realy going crazy from pain.
thanks in advance
