I had my spinal fusion on Jan. 25 of this year.  Walking is a great way to strengthen things.  I'm currently doing water PT and land PT, and I will admit being in the warm water pool is lovely and great exercise.  The therapists have me walking back and forth in the water, and then doing leg stretches.  Sometimes, local gyms have an arthritis program that is pretty inexpensive.  The Arthritis foundation has listings of places.
