I have been dealing with back issues on a personal level and doing transfers as a CNA can agitate the situation, so I am not taking the percocet (oxycodone) so as to not be sleepy during the hours I am working & driving, but am using the back spasm meds (cyclobenzaprine 10mg) and acetaminophen w/codeine before bed time.  I am doing research on exercises and stretches as well as eating the right way in an attempt to help myself.

I was in a car accident last year and ended up with a blood clot behind my left knee so I was on warfarin (coumadin) from last Sept. to March 28, 2008. I hit at 40 plus miles a hr when someone tried to beat me out by turning left while I was going straight through a green light.   My knees took quite a hit and my back gives me grief...lower area more than upper.  I tripped over a chair (round stool) at work about a month ago and landed on my side as I was trying to regain balance.  Ever since then I have been in more pain especially when waking up.  A couple of weeks ago, I couldn't get up and cried out in pain throughout the day....finally called 911 and went to the hospital.  They x-rayed the spine, said---no broken bones.  Gave me three doses of morphine spaced out and then a perscription for the oxycodone and told me to contact my doctor for a follow up.

My doctor sent me back for a MRI of the spleen and liver because the pain radiated front to back.  That just showed cysts in the kidney (fluid filled).  Meanwhile I was off work for nearly a week and now am regrouping as to what to do next.  My doctor doesn't want to refer me to a Chiropractor.

I try to use China Gel also to rub across the lower back.  I use compression stockings and special ankle supports while on my feet at work.  I just started wrapping my knee.  Pretty soon I will look like a mummy.....

I also had extreme pain in the morning, it took me at least an hour to be able to stand up right every day.  I had to crawl out of bed.  It turned out to be a herniated disc at the L4/L5 and two other bulging discs.  I had a lot of inflammation in the area that radiated out into the SI joints (the fluid was visible on the MRI).  Once they got the inflammation under control (with oral steroids and caudal epidurals and steroid injections) I woke up one morning late for work, bounded out of bed and later I thought, WOW I can't believe I just did that!

You definitely need to see your physician to have him order some tests.  Try not to let this go on much longer, because you know that the longer you ignore back pain, the worse it can get without treatment. Your doc can order tests (definitely a MRI to see what is going on in there) and prescribe anti-inflammatories.

My personal advice would be to NOT see a chiropractor until you figure out what's wrong.  I saw one first and my neurosurgeon almost came straight out and said he thinks that's when my disc fully extruded was during a chiro manipulation.  I don't have a problem with chiropractors otherwise, just when they won't use today's medical tests to help diagnose so their patient doesn't get worse.

Good luck!

It sounds like what you're describing is soft tissue (ligment ,tendon, etc) injuries around your spine, which can become worse over time. Given the severity of your pain and the functional limitations it's now placing on you, it probably is time to consult with a your local physician or reputable medical acupuncturist. Deep tissue massage and deep, intensive needles can help.I think.
Good luck to you!
