spinal tap complication

My young neighbor just had a baby by C-section (they cut large up and down vs. small and across).  The doctors subsequently performed a spinal tap.  She is experiencing severe headaches which I know is not unusual.  However, she is experiencing leaking of spinal fluid into her system.  The doctors then performed a blood patch, which was unsuccessful, and which created another hole in her back.  This poor young girl is flat on her back, in pain, with a baby to take care of.  Is leaking of spinal fluid common?  And is the fact that the blood patch was unsuccessful something to be concerned about?  This girl is still attempting to breast feed the baby, despite her pain and the fact that she is taking Vicodin for her pain.
