There is believed to be a hereditary and genetic linkage in some bipolar cases but Its not something you need to worry about with a three year old unless he is having issues.

As to control without meds.  Well there are three types of bipolar - BP1, BP2 and Cyclothymia which is the mildest form - and inside each of those classifications you have different behaviors and degrees of seriousness.  What treatment you need depends on the symptoms you have.

I dont know of any classes that can teach you how to control bipolar without meds, personally I find it hard to believe someone who is actually bipolar can cope without a mood stabiliser long term - there are people who say that CBT can help you learn to cope and live with BP but even then meds would be usual - it really depends on the circumstances - what sort of behaviour does she show?
