overwhelmed

This is the month I lost my dad last to year to cancer, been having a real hard time concentrating  and been forgetting things, plus my son has had a hard time in school this year between having a teacher who would not listen to him to being bullied it seems like I'm at that school all the time, we recently moved classes due to the teacher not wanting to realize my child could have a possible learning disorder dyslexia, and they put him a teachers class who deals with children with dyslexia  just had a sit down with her yesterday and she tells me getting him tested would be a good idea so we are doing that. I just feel over whelm , just when I think we got this under control something else pops up, but i guess that what you have when you have a kiddo that has so many medical problems.

No i dont have a dr, but I do talk to someone free consuarl  from my husbands work but it has been hard for me to make time cause of my son's dr appt's I 'm not blaming my son it's just we have speech therphy twice a week after school, and get alllergey shots once a week and thats on a good week when were not seeing the asthma dr, the ent, and wednesday nite church for him.

plus the person I see from my husbands work is really nice but i dont know how to talk to him, I dont know what to say when i go in there so the sessions are very short, can someone suggest how i can talk to him.

charlydawn - We had to work through MHMR when I lived in Dallas and was treated as a teenager. It is not the best set-up. My heart goes out to you. I don't know what it's like in your area, but it was severely under-funded and understaffed over twenty years ago. I can't imagine it's gotten any better.

I have had memory problems since I was young. I think the concentration problem has gotten worse as the bipolar itself has gotten worse. From what I can see, those are both common.

I take it you are uninsured. You might go back to MHMR and insist you need help immediately or you could try to find a private psych who will cut you a break on the cost. There may be someone who can do a referral for you. There might be an organization there who can refer you to someone who is low-cost. We had a group called Casa - Casa de los Amigos, I think. I ended up in one of their group homes for a while. I believe they are non-profit. They could be statewide or there could be a similar organization near you. Is the State Hospital still open? I was committed to Wichita Falls and there was a large adult population. They may have shut it down, but if things get bad that might be an option. If you can go in voluntarily, they'll get you on medication and discharge you as fast as they can. They were only picky when it was an involuntary commitment. I know it sounds bad, but the illness isn't a walk in the park either. I hope you find some assistance. Good luck!

Have not been on meds since '99, I know bipolar is no joke but i dont want people thinking i'm doing this to draw attention to my self, when i tell people i'm close to that i am bipolar they say they dont believe i have it cause i can hide it so well and then there are times i cant hide it all. when i cant hide it i just stay home until i can get thur the rough patch.
can anyone tell me if not being able to concentrate and forgetting things is part of the bipolar, when i was on meds i was on 300mg of lithium a day and 50mg of zoloft too.

Believe me I know where you are coming from on the hard time, my mother died on December 22nd and even 4 years on it not easy to deal with, I can appreciate what you are going through.

Basically LeftCoastChick is right - Bipolar is not a joke its serious illness and you should be able to get help via the hospital.

What medication are you taking for your bipolar?

Biipolar is a serious illness, there is no such thing as not severe enough. You sometimes really have to push for treatment. Go to social services or if you are feeling really rough the ER. You have a right to get treatment. How is your son getting help?

I'm sorry you're going through such a stressful time, it's great your son is in a special class. My brother has severe ADHD, and he didn't get assistance in time, though he did get some by grade 7.  It sounds like you are a super mom, and that's awesome.

Have you thought about seeing a psychiatrist instead? Have you been diagnosed with BP or are you just looking for advice? What I do suggest is you write down what you would like to talk about before you go to your app't. It's really important you take care of yourself as well, or parenting will be more of a challenge.
