Lithium

Ok so I've recently been diagnosed as bi polar by a psychiatrist. This was after an hr of talking....I've never been to a psychiatrist before is that normally how it happens? But about the lithium, I am looking at that as my only treatment option as of now. I can't be on any mood stabilizers that go through the liver, my dr said lithium was processed through the kidneys. She also said lithium is sort of an archaic treatment compared to newer medicine but they definitely know the effects of the medication. What I want to know from as many of you that are willing, is your thoughts on lithium. Has anyone had or heard of a good or bad experience? My dr said side effects include tremors (?), seisures, thyroid issues, regular blood work to check kidneys & lithium levels. All this concerns me but I am tired of feeling like this. HELP!

I have taken Lithium for 5 yrs. I have never gained weight on it or had side effects thru these years. When I first started taking Lithium it took 2 weeks for my body to get use to it. Yes, it can effect your Thyroid. But everyone is different. All the drugs have pluses and minuses. It is extremely important to get your blood work done on Lithium when the dr tells you , more often at the beginning. It's really no big deal. When I started we had to play around a bit to find the therapeutic level that worked for me. It is also very important to drink lots of water, juice and sodas don't count. You don't want to become toxic. This med is easy to learn how to make it work for you. Honestly it's the only med I will take. Hope this helps.

I tried lithium too. For me, no good. Side effects were severe leg cramps.
I was diagnosed rather quickly the first time. So had a second opinion. Then later even went to a Super specialist in the field of bipolar who also chose to uphold the diagnosis.
I'm also helped by talk therapy. So I have a psychologist. A support group. Plus I'm friends here on Medhelp with other Bipolars. When others understand it helps.   Pamela

I tried Lithium but gained a ton of weight which of course made me feel worse. I switched to Lamictal but needed more help after about 6 months. So I added Effexor and then Abilify. Now Clonopin as well.

I didn't have any negative side effects from the Lithium other than weight gain. It's a pretty old med, been around for awhile. It's a good place to start. Just discuss it again w your doc if you're worried and commit to getting you're blood work done.
