I have this problem although i don't take topamax. I used to have very thick hair now it has become really thin so that i think in a couple of years i will become bold. None of my family is bold even my grandfather who died at the age of 95 had nice black hair.
My opinion about this is that not the meds which can cause it but the anxiety associated to all the psch diseases which is responsible. In another forum i heard people saying lamictal cause it, i don't think so either.
However one lady who had this problem asked her pdoc and he advised selenium and zinc for med induced hair loss when she started losing hair (she thought Lamictal was the culprit but could not be sure) her hair loss stopped falling immediately. She took 200mcg of selenium (not mg) and 50 mg of zinc a day. I assume even if your hair is OK , vitamins and minerals do you good, especially vitamin B complex
As IL said depakote causes hair loss but this is mentioned in its brochure as well as weight gain. If other meds do not mention this still people taking them will think they are the cause, the main cause is ANXIETY
Topamax made all of my hair fall out, i was thin, but now kinda bald! Plus once I stopped taking it I gained a ton of weight!
It appears to be a potential. Look on the medication website and ask your psychiatrist for clinically accurate answers. It happens with other mood stabilizers such as Depakoate as well but if a person takes folic acid that can often be of help with this side effect.
