confusion

My nephew is severely depressed. He is 16.  He has bouts when he cannot do any reading, listening, copying for school.  I think that this is tied to his depression.  Others think that he is trying to get out of work. Does this happen to others. How do you get out of it?

Thank you.  People who should know better are the ones pushing the "he's spoiled" point of view. No one seems to understand that it takes time to find the right med.

Get out of work? He's 16 even if it is just school work. A lot of kids that are depressed that young cannot be given tough love so be very careful with that. Being depressed that young and having a lot of work and stress and expectations on you at the same time is really not healthy. I would give him a break and tell him you know what if you get a c it's OK . Tell him you love him, and take make sure others tell him the same let him know how much you care about him. But tough love and pressure can lead to huge problems so be very careful with that. Be gentle and soft and kind.  xoxo manda

Yes this can happen when a person is depressed. I have experienced it. It would be worthwhile to speak to his psychiatrist and therapist (if he is seeing one, if not it would help him to find a referral) but also to a guidance counselor at the school he goes to because there should be specific services for people with disabilities that could provide accommodations that could help him. I know that was helpful for me.
