how to get someone help

my sister is bipolar big time!! how do you get them to understand what is happening and get them into treatment she has hurt my whole family horribly, she is cycling very high right now as alway around Christmas, i have heard they are addicted to the highs so is it like being hooked on drugs and is that how you approach it, i am not trying to offend anyone here i have my own demons but i love her when she is normal and want to get her help, knowledge will erase my ignorance so forgive me if i this is sounding stupid.

Yes well as someone who has recovered from schizoaffective disorder (read through my posts) I can tell you that the number 1 myth about bipolar is that mania is fun. Its a frightening feeling of being speeded up and losing judgment. Also its not an addiction as it occurs naturally. Its part of the disability and needs treatment. What is true is that a person with any psychiatric disability often lacks the self awareness to start treatment or seek help on their own. Encourage her to seek help in a supportive manner because it will be helpful for her recovery. NAMI friend and family support groups are good for awareness, education and understanding as well. Additionally, understand that the holidays are an emotional stressor point for many people, regardless of whether they have bipolar or not. There should be some referral hotlines for your local area that could make a referral to a psychiatrist for her that would be of help.
