I hate evil forum software - I did not meant to click post..
Anyway what I was saying is that Prozac is considered to be the least of the AD's likely to cause it and you say you have used it before so itisnt a bad choice as you know you can tolerate - Anti Depressants in general and SSRI's in particular can be such a loaded gun its important to stick to what works I think.
From what I have read all AD's including Prozac have weight gain as a side effect, they increase the urge to eat as a side effect - Prozac is supposed to not do this and cause weight loss but if you read beyond the drug company propaganda you will find a host of people who gained weight on Prozac just as they did on every other AD.
SSRI's are evil IMO anyway ;)
Lamactil is great! Like horselover said, it will take time to titrate up to the right levels. It took me almost 2 months. What a difference it has made. I've found that I've no longer got my carb cravings, but I think it's because it helps with impulsive behaviors, mine being serious disordered eating. (I'm a bulemic in remission, but was still binging) I found with all of the SSRI's that I was on, I had wicked cravings, gotta love brain impulses. Self-care is so important, and remember the drugs help you to get there, but you have to work along with them. Sounds like you are off to a great start!
The first time I was on Lamictal I took it in conjunction with Topamax. I believe it was the Topamax that was responsible for some weight loss, but it could have been Lamictal, too. I remember being specifically told that if I had winter carbohydrate craving they would probably go away from one or the other. Unfortunately, they were not effective for my bipolar.
I have not taken an SSRI in years after bad experiences with Zoloft and Paxil so I can't advise you about the Prozac.
I tried Lamictal a second time a few years after the first experience and think I lost a little weight again, but again saw no benefit. I do not know if there was a direct connection with weight loss, but I didn't gain. I'm on lithium now and I don't think I'm gaining either. If I've gained, it's been minimal - I do feel bloated sometimes, but a day or two later, I am back to normal.
You know it takes quite a while to get up to speed on Lamical, right? I want to say six weeks. Very important to go slowly. Your doc will likely give you a starter pack if that's the med you've decided to try. Good luck!
Are you trying to find a drug that will promote weight loss?
