Side effects of stopping birth control

Hello!  I have been taking birth control pills (Sprintec) nonstop for 7 years now.  I am currently in Europe (will be here for a while) and I am about to run out of pills.  I have not found a doctor here yet who can prescribe me more.  I am also not able to get in contact with my OBGYN in America.  Everyone I talk to here (family, friends, etc.) say that I should just take a break from BC.  This sounded like a great idea to me until I went online and read stories of women who stopped taking their birth control pills.  I read about all the side effects they got...weight gain, break outs, spotting, excessive bleeding, headaches, etc...  I am 22 years old, so I am still prone to break outs (and I really don't want to break out more than I already do), I already have a heavy flow as it is with the pills, and lets just say I don't want to gain extra weight.  Since I can't talk to my doctor I thought posting a question online may help.  If I could get some opinions from doctors and people who have stopped taking birth control pills themselves, then that would be great! :) Thank you so much!
Have a great day!

Thank you very much for your response!  You are right...but I hope that my experience doesn't turn into a horror story.

At present, I've been on the pill for at least six years.  Last year, I didn't take it for a month just to see what would happen.  I, too, read the horror stories and the tales of missed periods, but all that happened to me was that my period went back to the hellish way it had been before the pill.  I take Microgestin.

Remember that everyone's body will respond differently to stopping a medication like this.  Of course the ones you're going to find on the internet are going to be the bad ones as people tend to only be chatty when things don't go well.  Look at reviews for some businesses and you'll wonder why/how they've been around for so many years.  Obviously there are still a lot more happy customers than unhappy customers for those businesses.  Likewise, with the horror stories out there on getting off the pill, you'd wonder how your particular pill stayed on the market and such.  Same principle, likely plenty of unproblematic experiences that just were something people expected to happen like that so no one said anything online.
