Dear annie37:  Sometimes a mammogram will show an abnormality.  In these cases, a compression film is often done to see if the abnormality persists.  Often, these clear up with the second mammogram.  In young women with dense tissue, an ultrasound may also be done to further clarify the abnormality.  Once the films are officially read, by a radiologist, the doctor will be able to better clarify whether there is anything that requires further work up or not.
