Bleeding from Nipple

Is bleeding from the nipple a sign of cancer?  I am freaked out.  I have always had nipple discharge, but now I get a bit of brown/red discharge from one duct of my left breast.  I have no lumps.  I am so scared.  I have a doctors appointment next week.

It's understandable that this is a concerning time for you.  I think many people find waiting (for tests, results, procedures, etc) the hardest.  I think it's natural to be frightened and anxious.
I have this new philosophy where I try not to stress until at least just before something.  Stressing doesn't solve anything and can sometimes make the situation worse.

My advice would be to try and relax.  Maybe spend some quality time with your family to take your mind off this.  Anything that will distract you could be helpful.

Don't squeeze your breast.  This won't help and could make things worse.  It's probably a good sign that the blood isn't coming out spontaneously.  Sometimes clothing rubbing against your breast can be enough to stimulate it to discharge.

Have you had your breast examined previously for the discharge?  Just curious.  Brown sounds like old blood where the red stuff sounds fresh.

I had a bloody nipple discharge which was spontaneous.  I saw my doctor he did a breast exam and took a swab of the blood.  He also ordered blood tests.  I had a mammogram and an ultrasound.  Microcalcifications were found on my mammogram and ?blood/ debris found with the ultrasound.  I then saw a surgeon who refered me for a stereostatic biopsy.  The result of this came back negative for cancer.  I then had a ductogram.  A radiologist placed a needle and fine tubing into my duct and injected saline I think it was.  Maybe it was dye.  I can't remember now it was a few years ago and a lot has happened in that time.  I then had another mammogram which showed the duct well.  The mammogram showed that I had several intraductal papillomas.
Because my nipple was bleeding I had my duct surgically removed.  The results from this did come back saying that I had precancerous cells growing which then required further surgery and radiation.

I honestly wouldn't stress now because you don't know which way it will go.  Stuff happens all the time which is unexpected.  I would just take each moment as it comes and take this step by step.  You have a doctors appointment and you won't know anymore til then.  Even then you may not know a lot more as your doctor may need you to undergo more tests (mammogram, etc).
Just athought but are you able to get an earlier doctor's appointment?  Could you say that you are having symptoms and are extremely anxious.

I was also just wondering if your high anxiety was caused by your over active thyroid.

I found a women-to-women webpage on nipple discharge informative.  It went through possibilities for different color discharges.

I'm sorry you're so stressed.  I hope my post has helped a little.

It can be but certainly not always ..... I congratulate you for making a Dr.s appointment; many women who are "freaked out" don't you know. This could very likely be something involving the milk duct ... a Papilloma is one thing tht comes to mind. You don't state if the discharge is spontaneous or only present when the breast is squeezed; this would also make a difference. Please let us know what you find out when you see the Dr. and come back anytime with questions or concerns.  Take care .....

I am so scared!  I can't eat, sleep!  The discharge only happens when I squeeze the nipple and now of cause I am squeezing it every 5 minutes to see if it has gone away!  I have always had a greyish discharge when squeezed.  Can you let me know your thoughts on that.  I have had trouble with overactive thyroid in the past.  I am scared out of my wits, I have a 6 year old girl who I can't bear her to be without me.

Can you give me any simple or herbal remidies to try and stop the bleeding.  It is only a drop when I squeeze my nipple, maybe once a day.  Any suggestions would be great.

There is nothing for you to do until you see the Dr. EXCEPT PLEASE STOP squeezing the nipple ... this sends a message to the brain and in turn some discharge will be produced. I'm very serious about this as there is NO reason for you to be squeezing your nipple like you say you have been .... you are just complicating whatever is wrong and I know for a fact that you are causing some of this discharge !!! There are no herbal remedies for symptoms such as you describe .... you are going to the Dr. in a few days but please in the meantime DO NOT continue to squeeze the nipple and produce this discharge. No matter what others have experienced you cannot compare your problem to theirs ... very few breast issues are exactly the same. Now, relax, stop squeezing and think about something else until you see the Dr.

Thanks for your advice.  I think I have OCD with the squeezing!  I am just so scared!!  The majority of what people say is that is only a small chance that it would be cancer, but I am still concerned.  What about heat or cold packs to the breast, would that help.  I can't feel any lumps, there is no readness and the breast has not changed in appearance, is that a good sign?

Hot or Cold packs would NOT help at all ...... You also need to stop examining your breast as this applies pressure to the area also. There really isn't any advice that we here can give you until you see your Dr. and have any testing that he/she may feel appropriate regarding your symptoms.  Regards .....

Thanks for your reply.  YOu are the only person who I have heard from with their story, I really appreciate it.

I have had nipple discharge since I was about 18, I am now 38.  At the time I was checked for putuitary problems including tumours and all was o.k.  Ever since then I have squeezed my nipples daily, even several times daily, I don't think I have stopped.  Do you think this would have caused it at all, by damaging the ducts or something.

In 2010 I had an implaon implant and two weeks later I had the blood/brown discharge from my right nipple, about 4-5 days later it went away and never came back.  I hade the implanon out in Jan 2011 and exactly two weeks later, the same thing in the left nipple and same thing about 4-5 days went away and it came back last week.

Could it be hormonal or have a caused a duct to be damaged, or in infection?  I am so scared I have cancer.  I always think negative!!

I started having heart palpitations in Sept 2010 and everything heart was fine, but they ran blood tests which did show my thryoid was extremely high but was still within the normal range, another blood test in Jan this year and it was still the same.

If you have any suggestions please let me know, I appreciated your time.

Squeezing wouldn't have helped but you likely would have seen symptoms long before now if it had of been the cause.
I personally wouldn't beat yourself up over this.  It is what it is.  It is best just to focus on the reality of the situation as it is now.

Bleeding irregularities are a side-effect of implaon implants.  Just read about some of its side-effects on another site.
The timing of your symptoms would seem to suggest that it may be as a result of the implant.  Did you mention these sympotms to your health professional at the time?

There is no way of knowing what it is or is not until you visit your doctor and have the necessary tests/ procedures, etc.
The research I did when I had my discharge suggested that cancer was less likely although still a possibility.  The chances that it isn't cancer are good.  But no one will know for certain until you see your doctor, etc.

Most people who are anxious seem to have a tendency to think less positively.

It's good that your bloods haven't changed even if they are at the high end of healthy.

No lumps or redness is probably a good sign.
Did they not follow the discharge up when you were younger?  Seems strange.

My advice would be to make a list of important information to take with you to the doctor.  Your history, when it started, symptoms during implaon use, etc.

I have a long history of anxiety and depression so I would also advise discussing your anxiety with your doctor.  Anxiety can be extremely limiting so is best treated.  I personally think that psychotherapy is more effective than meds.
My ocd meant that I would struggle to get to appointments on time (after having turned up early).  I also kept the surgeon waiting once which was embarrassing.
Something I read ages ago which helped my anxiety was that our thoughts often have no basis in the here or now.  Thinking about negative stuff and what may or may not happen isn't constructive to moving forward.  I expect I didn't communicate that very well.

I guess in a strange sort of way the discharge can be quite reassuring.  ??

I can identify with over-examining things.  I've had an enlarged lymph node or lump.  I asked my doctor to check it out and he suggested keeping a close eye on it.  I look for it every now and then just to see what's up with it.  Is it still there?  Has it changed?  I guess this is probably just an anxiety response to the not knowing.  The fear, the uncertaintity.

I keep being interrupted and are having trouble concentrating.

Other than to avoid stimulating the discharge by squeezing, etc and mentally and emotionally preparing yourself for your doctor's visit I don't think there's anything you can do.  Just try and be patient.  You may like to consider taking a support person along with you if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks so much!  I really do think it is the squeezing of this that has done it!  I am so paranoid about squeezing them.  I didn't squeeze for over 12 hours (wow) and there was no blood at all!!!
I really appreciate your comments so much.

It does sound like it could be the squeezing which is stimulating them.  12 hours is a good start and a great accomplishment.  Well done!!
I would still keep your doctor's appointment though and discuss this with them.

It could be that the initial problem resolved itself and that the current one is caused by the pressure.  Is hard to know but you still need to get it sorted either way.
If your breast is fine then you should strongly consider treatment, or a consult, for the anxiety.

Hi,
The bleeding has stopped.  Well I'm not real sure it was blood, it started off dark brown ish and then went clearer.  I was actually started a course of antiobitics for a tooth absus so maybe it was an infection!
I have been to my doc and had blood test of progesteron, estrogen and thyroid and another hormone (can't remember), and I am off 1/2 hour for ultrasounds.
Absolutely scared out of my brain.
Will let you know the results.  Hopefully later this afternoon.

got the results of ultrasound.
There are some well defined hypoechoic structures scattered throughout both breasts consistent with cysts of varying size measuring up to 1 cm in diameter.
The 0.9 cm lesion in the upper outer quadrant of the right breast contains echoes and is non specific in nature.  It has some features of a fibroadenoma.
A fine needle aspiration biopsy of this lesion is suggested.
Alternatively a follow up ultrasound in 3 to 6 months could be performed.
Comment - There is fobrocystic change in both breasts.  The lesion in the upper outer quadrant of the right breast has some internal echoes and some features of a fibroadenoma.

I spoke to my doctor this afternoon and she said not to be too worried, but she would recomment a fine needle biopsy, so I am booked in for next Wednesday.

Do I have cancer?  I am still freaking out.

Can anybody help me please?

Please help!!  It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for continuing the original thread ... it's a huge help.
You are asking a question that can only be answered by the results of your biopsy. Most results so far do NOT indicate any form of cancer. You need to stop dwelling on the subject of cancer for your own sake and accept what these biopsies show. The results you have been given are certainly NOT abnormal and are experienced by probably one half of all women who have investigated lumps or any other finding within the breast tissue. Perhaps some counselling would help you accept what you actually have and not dwell on all the "what ifs" ... Take care ....

Had my biopsy today.  They tried needle biopsy but couldn't get any fluid, so had to have a biopsy where they take the cells (core).  Is this bad?  I thought cysts were full of fluid?
